Re: Memory management worst than on Windows

Yup. It is an old page.

But the contents are still valid.

The solutions are 12+ years old.

Re: Memory management worst than on Windows

It all depends on what you want.

Overcommit is the default as most people don't really use the memory they claim.

Re: Help with X11 forwarding on Fedora 23

It is ALWAYS a domain socket (in /tmp/.X11-unix/X<display number>).

ANYTHING ELSE is insecure (which is why XDMCP is disabled, it cannot be encrypted, and passes any authentication/authorization...

Re: Interesting - Microsoft Auto-Scheduling Windows 10 Updates

Naaa. Non-volatile memory is easy to handle, and the code already exists to reset the peripherals (it is nothing more than a sleep/resume operation). Microsoft has already been left behind in...

Re: Find my IP on a router

Which is why I said the ARP entries don't matter, only the source IP numbers matter.

Most of the hotspots act as relays... not bridges. Thus you would never see the ARP entries for the other hosts...

Re: sounding a bell

Have you tried something simple like "tput bel"?

tput uses the TERM environment variable to translate the capability names into specific escape sequences using the terminfo database.

tput can...

Re: Find my IP on a router

You can always get the IP number assigned to your host with an "ip addr".

And since you don't own the router, you can't change its ARP tables.

You could change your local firewall to drop any...

:) Depends on where you are, and where you are downloading from...

When I was working we had a 650MBit network connection to the rest of the DoD...

I imagine by now it is multiple Gbit...

Re: where is the PATH built these days?

Depends on your distribution...

I think most are using /etc/profile.d to set the defaults for the various shells. Each file there sets a profile for a different application (usually a shell being...

Re: A matter of opinion ...

It is getting more and more opaque, with fewer and fewer ways to look at system longs, system configurations, and document what/how a system is configured. (I really really hate hidden configuration...

Re: 32 bits won't get you two ...

You get caught putting it in a dumpster and you will get fined (at least in most places now).

Electronic devices have hazardous substances... So you can add that fee into the mix as well.

Re: how to create fake DATA inside MariaDB SQL database???

I wouldn't use SQL. It is well known to be a rather poor language, lacking a LOT of features that SHOULD have been there.

Use Perl (with dbi), or Python.

Re: how to create fake DATA inside MariaDB SQL database???

You can also take that 1000 rows and add qualifiers.

For names do I,II,III, jr, sr. That gives you 6000 rows for names (5 with suffixes+1 without).

Repeat adding middle intials (just one...

Re: 32 bits won't get you two ...

Look at in a slightly different light: $245.00 + 4 square feet of floor space reclaimed (currently the average is about $112/square foot), so $245+4*($112)= $693

:)

Re: Can't seem to open ports 25 and 23

That is what it looks like.

the only way around it (if the ISP won't unblock it) that I know of is to find a VPN connection that won't block it. Then your host IP number is what you get from the...

Re: Good Post on Fedora and Nvidia from Josh Boyer

Actually, nothing prevents the counterfeiting anyway.

The money is in the board, not the driver.

All the "signing" validated by the driver is to ensure that the driver matches the board.

Re: Fedora can't find "Downloads" directory

It sounds like you may have accidentally renamed the directory... Hopefully, not an accidental deletion.

Though I would use "find" to locate a file you remember being present.

If all else...

Re: Switching terminal screens from Mac keyboard

It is "ctrl-alt-fn", not "alt-fn".

alt-fn should only work on the console itself - without a GUI.

If you want old.. My first computer was a 68020 with an ST512 controller and only 2MB of memory, running System V r2.
