I manage about ten Fedora workstations at my company, and BIOS/firmware updates have to be done overnight so as not to disrupt production. The problem is that I share the on-call schedule with a colleague via a shared Google Calendar. But my personal calendar on my Android phone kept getting out of sync with that shared schedule. The result: duplicate time slots and overlapping maintenance windows that nobody noticed until that very evening. If there is no mouse movement for 1/2 second the LED is extinguished, Only a low power LED within the mouse is active. Here is my problem.

When, at evening, II want to suspend Linux, I click on the "suspend" and then let go of the mouse. The act of the mouse switching to low power, acts as if I clieked the mouse to trigger a "wake from suspend". This results in Fedora system arriving at suspend, and immediately restarting.

The mouse function causes Fedora to act as "suspend is over".

I have tried the following... I clicked on the suspend, and immediately flipped the mouse up-side-down. This action stops the mouse electronics from turning on bright, (as if a mouse button was pressed). Fedora goes into suspend as it should, and stays that way until I click onto the mouse button.

What should the kernel do that would be better.
a) When suspend is activated. Immediately disable the mouse signalling. Currently this is not done, I can see the screen arrow follow mouse movement.
When the suspend logic detects or signals "motor off or suspend-completed", only then should the mouse cache be purged and the mouse logic support reactivated.

The link it proposes me opening is https drm.panic.fedora... and google also mentions it's a drm related crash. Drm for what? There's nothing on it... It wasn't even running, much less accessing anything. This machine has a few games from gog.com on it and that's about it. Not only did I purchase those games, I already owned most of them on CD/DVD with legit cd keys before buying them. So 5 out of 7 I own twice...

I very seldom go to that system and wake it, so it's only when I go in that room and notice the monitors on that I even know this has happened. When I do see it I'm mostly angry that it's awake at all.

Anyone else have a system that runs fine, but wakes from sleep on it's own so it can crash?

I should have added a line in the bash.rc to append a log of what caused the last wake events, assuming this even happens when the system wakes. I specifically check all systems to make sure they're fully asleep before leaving them, so there's no chance this failed to sleep. The motherboard led fans and such are clearly visible in all my systems so there's no chance they didn't hit S3 and I didn't notice. Lights off, power button flashing, its' ok to leave the room.

Nice system, dirt cheap and really nice hardware. Unfortunately, they sold it off and killed it because it was way too nice a camera system to sell for the money they were asking. I have 4 of the things (one for work, one for home, and 2 for the cameras that were cheaper in the system than they were to buy separately). For about 8 years they've worked great, 8 cameras each, and factually they're still running if you're ok with hooking a mouse and monitor to the NVR and using it there only. But if you want to see what's happening on your phone or PC, forget it. They've disabled the online service so the system no longer works remotely without that, and the NVR hardware was proprietary and there's no way to hack in, not easily anyway.

To repurpose the cameras, I decided to set up Frigate as a PC based NVR on a dedicated server. I had no idea what to choose, I just picked one and loaded it. The PC available at the moment (without wiping out some other test machine) was an old dual core AMD system. I got it all running, but the CPU isn't up to the task. These apps use a lot of CPU (without video hardware acceleration) so I guess I need more processor. I have other machines, but between power consumption and not wanting to load another one and find out it also is lacking, I'd be interested in hearing what others are doing this with.

Is anyone doing something similar? If so, what NVR software are you using? What system as the server? What cameras and what resolution?

Mine: 1080p/25 cameras. Streams are quite small really. 3 days of video on 3 or 4 cameras was only about 100GB, so storage speed is no issue. I turned the motion detection off just to get the CPU below 100%. That with never more than 4 cameras on, and now I'm doing 3 with the motion detection off and still about 65% CPU constantly. There's no ram requirements, no disk speed needed, PCI bus isn't taxed, but the CPU clearly has to be better than I'm using. What's amazing to me is the original Western Dig NVR box has a motherboard in it that's not much more than the board in my toaster. Somehow they've got PS2 ports, USBs, HDMI, VGA, Sound, 8 ports for POE ethernet, uplink port for standard ethernet, RCA jacks for video/audio, and all on a board not much bigger than the hard drive. It did motion detection, facial recognition, motion zones, motion trip lines, just all sorts of stuff with one dedicated chip, and did it on 8 1080p streams simultaneously. I just ordered an NVME from Newegg (Wd Black) which I had checked the box for in stock and the box for sold by Newegg, came with free shipping but just found out this morning that it's shipping from China and won't be here for 2 more weeks... (Estimated). Used to be things came UPS Brown from NJ next day for free shipping. How things have changed.

I guess the upside is, my experience with stuff from China is that the Chinese get a better deal on packaging materials than amazon does, because they pack things well... But regardless where you order from, it looks like reading the fine print is mandatory now. I never saw anything about shipping from China on the NE checkout, and I think I'da noticed that. :shrug:

During these times, my system froze up quite often. I resolved that when I broke down and installed Energizer Lithium batteries which were the only other AAs I had on hand at the time. I expected them to last till doomsday, well, they didn't. Not sure why the originals lasted for years and these which last forever in other stuff didn't, but ok. The mouse worked and the freezes stopped.

So the last couple weeks I started getting the same low battery warning and for the last few days it has started locking the system up again. I'm pretty convinced this is related. Now yesterday, I went and bought more regular AAs since a whole pack of them cost about what the 2 lithium batteries do. I'm not even sure how to go about figuring out what happens to assist in finding the issue code-wise. I have not yet attempted to plug in another USB input device when this happens and I may try that. When it happens, the screens stay as they were and the KB/Mouse stop entirely. Not sure I was even able to swap the numlock led but I will need to test that if it happens again. For now I'm letting the low batteries in and see if it happens some more. One thing I did notice was that it reports -1% remaining... Not sure if some math error resulting from that could be the cause.
