That said, I'm fixin' to make some LAN changes here.

I've been running off of a hodge-podge mish-mash mix of the Synology router (4 ports), a Netgear ProSAFE GS105 (5 port) Gigabit Switch, and various assorted wireless devices.

At this point, I'm thinking I want to take the printers (2) off wireless, and put them on ethernet, and running CAT6e to the "workbench" rather than allowing wireless hook-ups. I don't particularly want any inter-device cross-talk until the Router.

So ...

The proposed flow would be:

Starlink to Synology - single link

Synology to new Switch - single link

New switch to:

  1. Office Box,
  2. War Department Box,
  3. Bit Ripper Box,
  4. Entertainment Center
  5. HP Officejet,
  6. HP Laserjet,
  7. HP scanner,
  8. One (1) TV/Monitor (Radar Feed during WX events)


The Entertainment Center / TV Monitor can be put on the old 5 port Netgear.

I've wondered if a dual input/uplink on the new switch might be a good idea. (One direct to the Starlink if needed.)

That all said, I am aware several companies have had recent penetrations and glitches, but haven't taken enough notes.

Any brands/models I should prefer?
Any brands/models I should avoid?
Any other suggestions?

Those in-the-know Install some kind of a system monitor, (I use Gkrellm or btop), which will allow you to follow the process and identify when the needed changes have been made, and you can safely reboot your system.

The RPM Fusion HowTo page lists the RTX 3050 as supported, so that's a good thing. The question is ... which one (driver) is likely to be the right mix of performance and reliability.

By default, unless anyone advises differently, I think I'm going with the 595.xx.xx version ... or as close to it as I can get to it with what's in the repos.

So do paid/compensated bouquets of lavish gushing praise. So I'll ask here as well.

What are your experiences, caveats and anecdotal observations of using high-capacity HDDs (defined here as 8T plus) for long term storage in a NAS environment?

High capacity always runs the risk of massive data loss due to single points of failure, but my NAS/JBOD shelf is getting way overcrowded and quite heavy.

I have a 5.1 setup that works on windows using Dolby Atmos for Home Theatre spatial sound. The tv is connected to pc through HDMI, then from tv to receiver through optical cable. I tried CachyOS - no luck there as there seems to be some issue with hdmi audio, so I got no sound.

Then I tried latest version of Mint Cinnamon and Fedora from live USB (didn't go through with installation until I can make surround work)
In both cases, the most I could get is the front left and right speakers playing their correct channels, but nothing on surrounds, centre or subwoofer. Not even surr left channel playing on front left speaker, as some surround audio plays on stereo setups. The sounds on the surround channels were not playing at all. It was the same for direct file playback and the "test audio" window from the audio settings.
I managed to make surround work as excepted only when connecting pc directly to receiver with HDMI, and using receiver HDMI output for TV, but that locked the tv to 1080p30, which does not work for me :((

Is there an alternative for Dolby Atmos for Home Theatre to make this work?

I have a problem with my monitor.

It's a Samsung Super Ultra-Wide monitor that's running at 5120 x 1440 and has a refresh rate of 240 Hz

I also have an Asus 4070 Ti graphics card

Now to the problem. If I use 240 Hz and use programs like the screenshot tool, and sometimes use another program, the screen flickers.

If I run my monitor @ 60 Hz. There are no problems.

Built new pc and decided I had enough of the windows crap. Old grey beard who used unix,sunos and xenix in the 80's.
I have verified the kernel loads the proper module and recognizes the card. Verified that the card is in eth mode. Card is using firmware version 2.40.7000 which is NOT the most recent.
I am using QT-SFP+LR 10G 1310mm Fiber transceivers. Connected to Mikrotik CRS310-8G 2S in bridge mode.

Issue: At first it passed traffic at 1Gb not 10Gb. Now, (2 days later) it is a bit unreliable in that I get warnings about limited connection.
Now when I run sudo ethtool enps0 | grep Speed returns Unknown!

I have downloaded the newest firmware for the card, but am checking that there is not something I missed, prior to updating.

I got myself a wide monitor, Acer X34 (3440 x 1440 (UltraWide)). I use an HDMI cable. Before (currently also temporarily) there is an LG IPS224V-PN (1920 x 1080 (FHD 1080p)), which works normally.

The temporary solution for now is, boot up with the LG monitor, log in to the user account and then change the HDMI cable to the Acer X34 screen, and it displays a wide screen image on the monitor.
But such a tedious HDMI cable change.

After logging out of the user account, the "black screen" (X34) remains (as if the cable is missing) and when changing the HDMI cable to another LG monitor, it also appears as if a working cable is missing.

Blindly (black screen), when logging into the user account (entering the required password), then after logging out can log in again and the screen image appears back again when logging in (unlike when logged out, nothing is displayed on the screen).

I don't know where to start looking for a solution to the problem.

I tried to find a solution using a.i. (Grok) chat. I thought the problem was in the HDMI frequency ( 60 vs. 50 Hz ( 3440×1440@49.99 ( kscreen-doctor output.HDMI-A-1.mode.3440x1440@50 ) ) )
and that maybe you can force 1080p resolution when displaying SDDM (login) & boot (with a script), but I couldn't find a solution. I'm super new to Linux and I just got an old Intel Macbook that I want to convert to Fedora. I had Ubuntu running on it but I prefer Fedora.

The problem is the WiFi doesn't work which I know is because of the proprietary Broadcom driver. (Sorry if my terminology isn't right) So I followed the instructions to install rpmfusion and the broadcom-wl driver but after I rebooted it doesn't recognize WiFi at all anymore so I don't even get the failed connection. I'm connected with my phone by usb cable at the moment so I was able to do a full system update and do the downloads.

If anyone could help I'd appreciate it. I'm brand new to Linux so you might have to explain things like I'm an idiot cuz I am. :)
