I'm running Fedora 44 with KDE. I recently got a message that my root partition was full. I brought up a shell and confirmed, with the df command that this partition was indeed 99% full. After getting over my initial shock, I closed all applications, ran a dnf update and rebooted. I also removed a large log file from /var that had not been used since 2021. When the system returned, df reported that the root partition was 76% full.

I have several questions about this episode:

1) Is 76% full healthy for the root partition or is there more I should do?

2) My best guess as to what happened is that I was using a web browser (Brave--similar to Chrome) and was working on a tab that froze. I had to close the tab. A minute or two later I got the warning about the root partition. Maybe the Javascript, or something else, running in that web page entered an infinite loop and/or had a memory leak. Would that cause the root partition to fill up??

For the record, all my other partitions seem to be healthy. /boot is 37% full, /boot/efi is 14% full, /home is 14% full, /dev/sdb1 (removeable hard drive) is 50% full.

Since many years, MATE is one of my favorite desktops. It's very stable in these roaring times, and after every Fedora release upgrade, it looks just the same. Until now. How should I shutdown the system? I could not find the shutdown menu option on the place where it was before.
Only logout is left, so poweroff goes via lightdm or brute-force poweroff command.

The strange thing is: after login, the shutdown option is on its well known place, but it disappears. Why ?
Seen in Fedora 45 (few days before release) and Debian 14 (not yet released)

Yikes! I just managed to crash the X server/GUI!

I was running Mate Disk Usage Analyzer, trying to plan out some data moves to clear space on /home/Dan, and just about had it figured out ... and ...

*<BLIP!>* <....>

Uh, oh! Black screen!

The monitor then bounced between several reported resolutions of black, blinked a few times, and then settled again at 3840 x 2160, and the login screen faded in like it had been awakened in the middle of the night, and was still trying to get it's bearings.

Honestly, it surprised the 'ell out of me. This thing has been rock solid since we figured out the WPA glitch and I killed the associated culprits. Although this was obviously different because it didn't crank-out the whole system. It just took down the X server like a flat sap does a wobbly drunk.

I have no idea what glitched. At 32g, it wasn't an out-of-memory situation, but something surely and effectively clocked the X server.

So my warning is this: Until I know more, if you're going to run the Mate Disk Usage Analyzer ... save your work elsewhere first.

Once in a while I need to reboot to get to my desktop.
Graphics Processor: Intel® UHD Graphics 615
Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation
Product Name: Surface Go 2
System Version: 1
...

Works great except the system will not boot when it's connected to an HP G5 docking station. If I power off the Surface, disconnect it from the dock, boot the Surface, login and then connect it to the dock, everything works without issue.

As a test, I tried a different docking station. The Surface does boot when it's connected to a Dell WD22TB4 docking station.

When I try to boot the Surface with it connected to the HP dock, the Surface freezes on the black screen with the MS and Fedora logo and spinning icon, every time.

I'm not proficient with Linux so where do I start with troubleshooting? I can't find it now, but I read an Internet article where another user ran into a similar situation (different computer model) and determined it was not driver related but had something to do with grub and legacy BIOS. Going from memory, I believe that person was able to go into their PC's UEFI BIOS and enable a setting that allowed legacy boot for something. Maybe USB but I can't remember.

Anyway, there's no legacy setting that I can find in the Surface's BIOS. Does anyone know what's happening and where to start troubleshooting?

After installing a new WD Black SN770 nvme and cloning the old sata Blue SSD drive on to it, I find the performance of the new black drive to actually be worse than the old sata. Copying large files from one sata SSD to another typically maintained about 450MB/s throughput, even when doing several files. Large files to me = movie images and usually 18-35GB each. I recall copying 80G of files and watching the results and it was around 450MB/s at the end, average.

Using Clonezilla Live to clone the old ssd system drive showed it averaged about 33.02GB/minute. That drive had 285.9GB of data on it. Other than a couple large games, no large files that I recall. Doing the math on those numbers, it maintained 550MB/Sec for the entire 285GB. That indicates to me the nvme was waiting on the ssd, as I would expect.I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.

Copying files in dolphin however, moves about 100MB/s slower than it did from sata ssd to sata ssd, and almost 200MB/s slower than Clonezilla cloned the system drive. I used system info to track the SSD temp and it never raises above 31C, and with a idle temp of 26C, I can't imagine there's thermal throttling going on. But the throughput graph sure looks like that's what it does. Even if it runs out of on-drive cache I would expect the sustained write speed should be greater than the max speed of a sata ssd. But I have yet to see it average 400MB/s during a write.

I worry that doing this via rpm will corrupt dependency information built by dnf and I suspect that data is incorrect to begin with.

For the past 2 days, every time I got to Amazon Prime Video, the tab in Firefox freezes. Sometimes I can mouse over a video and the popup comes up, other times it won't even do that. Once I get to the site the tab is dead. It doesn't become responsive again. I can't go to any other website or anything in that tab. Opening new tabs allows them to work but the Prime Video tab is just borked. Today I left it there for 30 minutes, it's still unresponsive. I can use Chromium and the site works, so it seems to be restricted to just Firefox. I'm running that latest version 158.0. Oddly this also occurs when I use Firefox Nightly, which I don't use often anymore but still have installed. With Firefox, I disabled all the extensions for blocking website stuff (ads, trackers, etc). Still freezes. Is this happening for anyone else?

The Amazon ordering website works just fine.
