Hello everyone,

I recently encountered a serious problem re-installing my Fedora 44 system.

I have a dual-boot with Windows 11 and I tried to encrypt everything progressively (W11 and the data partition shared by both OS with Veracrypt, Linux system with LUKS2). The point of re-installing Fedora was to encrypt my linux system.
Here is a picture to understand the overall structure:
Partitions1.png:

Unfortunately, now I get a black screen while booting the laptop which is not capable of loading/finding the GRUB correctly. While trying to boot selecting the UEFI entries (such as "Windows Boot manager" or "Fedora") I got the same results.

All the partitions are in place and I can access after uncrypting them from a live session using zulucrypt, a useful app that can both handles veracrypt and LUKS partitions.

So far, the only way I found to use my computer is to :
- open Super Grub 2 from a live usb
- manually boot the core.img which is located in /boot/efi/i386-pc but only if I boot in legacy & UEFI (it won't work in UEFI alone)

and after that rather long operation to boot a system, only my Linux system is showing up (no more Win11). The version of the GRUB is 2.12.

To repair this computer I already tried to:
- use boot-repair for automatic repair but it did not work out
- use Rescatux but the "Boot" or "Grub" tools did not change anything. Even stranger, while trying to load UEFI options only the live usb disk was showing up, not my internal SSD.

I found this tutorial to clean things up but I fear it may be a bit too radical:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US...b2-bootloader/

Also the firmware runs in BIOS mode and not EFI which i find weird since my computer is quite recent and can run in EFI mode recent and perhaps that has something to see with this mess.

I have backups so no crucial data will be lost if I had to go through the painstaking process of reinstalling both systems from scratch but before losing quite some time doing this, I would like to UNDERSTAND why things have messed up so badly.

Thanks for reading this long description :thumb:, and if you are interested in helping me out, you can read the section below.
----
What I have done BEFORE the installation (which may have messed things up) :
- I reencrypted my Windows system + data partition with Veracrypt (it was encrypted with Bitlocker beforehand)
==> everything was fine afterwards, Win 11 & Linux were booting properly and data on the shared partition worked fine.

- I tried to encrypt my existing Fedora partition using this tutorial :
https://eglug.org/how-to-add-full-di...-reinstalling/
and I also used this one:
https://blog.alex.balgavy.eu/encrypt...ion-with-luks/

I successfully managed to encrypt my Fedora partition but not completely updating everything (I did change crypttab and fstab
However, since the first tutorial was based on ext4 partitions and that my Fedora system was in btrfs I used agent AI to adapt things. I should not have done this since I used commands beyond my level.
I gave up in the end, rebooted but the grub was still there, I managed to boot in Win 11 (but of course not Fedora).

- Before the Fedora re-installation I manually deleted (because the Fedora installer could not do it automatically) my two last partitions with K partition manager: the encrypted system and the previous one (the /boot)

In case that information is needed:
Operating System: Fedora Linux 44
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
Firefox was already entered in the appropriate place in lieu of Slitherer. On the not-so-much side, it also decided to install several i386 packages. Still skritching my head over that one.

That said, it boots, runs, suspends, shuts down and otherwise behaves like any other fedora pre-release in relatively good odor and karma.

But, although not strictly necessary, I'll probably ditch that particular install in favor of the final when it is released. At which time, I'll try the runnin'-rat version.

Hi!

I am new in this Forum and I don't know, what you think about usage of AI.

I have used AI for the follwing, and I hope, it's helpful regardless of the source.

BR

WB

Solved: PipeWire initially used a generic stereo-fallback sink instead of the UCM-configured speaker device.
The SOF/SoundWire card was detected, and direct ALSA playback worked, but normal PipeWire audio was silent.

System

Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 14IPH11 (LENOVO-83TC)

Fedora 44

Intel Core Ultra Series 3 / Panther Lake

SOF SoundWire audio with RT721 + RT1320

ALSA card: sof-soundwire

Symptoms

No audio from applications through PipeWire.

Applications and PipeWire showed audio activity, but the internal speakers were silent.

Direct ALSA playback to the speaker worked:

bash
speaker-test -D plughw:0,2 -c 2 -t wav

aplay -l listed the internal speaker as device 2.

PipeWire initially exposed only a generic Stereo sink with profile stereo-fallback.

Cause

Running:

bash
alsaucm -c sof-soundwire dump text

failed because this UCM configuration file was missing:

/usr/share/alsa/ucm2/codecs/rt721+rt1320/init.conf

The missing file prevented UCM from loading for this card.
PipeWire consequently fell back to the generic stereo-fallback sink rather than creating the UCM-defined speaker sink.

Workaround

After installing alsa-ucm-utils to get alsaucm, I created the missing directory and file:

bash
sudo install -d /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/codecs/rt721+rt1320
printf 'Include.rt721.File "/codecs/rt721/init.conf"\nInclude.rt1320.File "/codecs/rt1320/init.conf"\n' \
| sudo tee /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/codecs/rt721+rt1320/init.conf

Then I verified that UCM loaded:

bash
alsaucm -c sof-soundwire dump text

The output included:
Device.Speaker {
...
PlaybackPCM "_ucm0001.hw:sofsoundwire,2"
...
}

Finally, I restarted the user audio services:

bash
systemctl --user restart wireplumber pipewire pipewire-pulse

After the restart, wpctl status showed separate Speaker, Headphones, and HDMI sinks.
The internal Speaker sink became the default, and audio worked in YouTube and other applications.

Notes

This is a workaround, not a proper package fix. The file is under /usr/share/alsa/ucm2, so a package update may overwrite or remove it.
Please check whether a newer alsa-ucm-conf package already supplies the missing file before applying the workaround.

Hopefully this helps identify a missing UCM configuration for the RT721 + RT1320 codec combination on this Lenovo model.

So for Fedora 45 which is currently scheduled for release on Oct 20th, what updates out of those would we expect? Would the new Fedora 45 KDE right after 10/20 go right to 6.8.0 or 6.7.6 after Nov 03?

Hi there a simple one here, I just need to know which entries I can remove, because it seems that there's a lot of duplication/rubbish in there.

I have two win11 installs on an internal WDC NVMe and Fedora 44 on the internal KINGSTON SSD

I choose my required OS at the BIOS boot selection menu, BUT Fedora keeps poking its nose in and will over-ride when I select a Win11 option UNLESS I DO A COMPLETE POWER-DOWN. If not It will show a grub type menu and go straight to Fedora (the top option) of the grub type menu.
[I KEPT THE TWO OS's ON SEPERATE SSD's TO AVOID THIS HAPPENING-Oh the Irony]

There is no entry for Fedora in the windows bcd, so I assume the problem entry is in the below mess of the efibootmgr. Pointer plzzzz. Cheers CD
