Personally, I liked it better when Redhat was unencumbered by serving a tech giant overlord. Whereas before 2019, Redhat would have been my hands-down, automatic-without-thought go-to for commercial/enterprise level systems, I have to admit I'd be more inclined to slow down and think it over these days.

I can't point to any single reason why ... just a gut feeling. But I'm also very willing to admit that might be more superstition than direct data supported.


What say you?

The author is obviously biased, and I wouldn't go so far as to say that "Wayland breaks everything," but it is surprising how many features that long-time Linux/UNIX X11 users have taken for granted still aren't available in Wayland.

For example, window shading—the ability to "roll up" a window to just its title bar—is a handy feature that I use every day in Window Maker. In Window Maker I can do it either by double-clicking the window's title bar or by hitting Ctrl-Alt-h in the window (then unroll with that same key combo when the title bar has focus). I'm so used to window shading after decades of using Window Maker (and fvwm before that), that I can't even imagine not being able to do that. Lots of other plain X11 window managers also have that feature (e.g. Enlightenment, IceWM, Openbox, Fluxbox and other *box variants). Even KDE Plasma has window shading under X11, but not under Wayland. Wayland has no native ability to do that, mainly because it lacks the equivalent of X11's WM_STATE property (which you can query with X11's xprop utility).

In general Wayland doesn't expose all the window properties that X11 users take for granted, leaving that up to individual compositors (whose number and quality can vary) or by running X11 utilities under Xwayland (for X11 applications). The existence of Xwayland itself is a testament to X11's extensibility (superior to Wayland's), and is what has made Wayland even usable, as many X11 applications have not been rewritten for Wayland. Many of the GUI toolkits that started as X11 toolkits still don't have all their features available in Wayland. For example, in GTK3 some methods and objects aren't supported in Wayland and likely never will be (e.g. gtk_window_move(), gtk_window_get_position(), gtk_window_set_position(), gdk_window_get_pointer()).
