Not for the first time I am confused. What is the difference between:

/usr/share/fonts

and

/usr/local/share/fonts

???

I am not sure where to add new fonts. There must be some reason for have more than directory.

It's just an historical one. New fonts should be added to /usr/local/share/fonts (as most of the system wide user installations should go under /usr/local) but, if you put them in /usr/share/fonts, it will make no difference. It really depends on how you partition your hard disk: If you keep /usr/local on a separate partition, when the need to reinstall or upgrade arises, it will not be touched.

Ahhh ... history. What would we do without it?

Thanks for your information.

I installed a range of new fonts in what seemed to be the default location of /usr/local/share/fonts but OOo, GIMP and Scribus are not automatically finding them. I know I could the fonts to /usr/share/fonts but there must be a way of getting applications to automatically locate where the fonts are. Otherwise what is the point of having more than one potential location for fonts?

Is there another step that I have to go through other than just installing the fonts in my selected directory?
