What desktop environment are you using? (KDE or Gnome)

I know in gnome you can change both the login screen (GDM) and the splash screen which is the small graphic that appears just after you login and shows some of the services loading. You can go to http://www.gnome-look.org to obtain any additional artwork you might want to pretty-up your desktop.

You change these settings in the "System/Preferences" area I think. I am not at my Linux system right now. :)

If you have not gotten any more detailed info on this by the time I get home, I will follow-up with the exact menu locations for making these changes.

Hope this helps,
Brent

The grub menu picture is /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz . I have done simple color changes on the existing image by opening it with the gimp.
In theory, you can use an existing image and change it to 14 colors but, I haven't had too much luck with any image that has a lot of colors to start with.

Here are my notes: My FC system is on (hd1,1) and yours may be different.

# Using the Gimp:
Right click on the image and click on Image->Mode->Indexed...
In the Indexed Color Conversion dialog that appears, click on the radio button
"Generate optimal Palette" and in "# of colors" enter 14. Click OK.
( The image should be only 14 colors )

# Using convert utility: ( This is my preference! )
Resize the original image to 640480 pixels, set it to 14 colors and gzip it.

convert -size 640x480 calvin.png -resize 640x480 \
-colors 14 +dither calvin.xpm && gzip calvin.xpm

# You need to add or modify a line into your grub.conf
#splashimage=(hd1,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
splashimage=(hd1,1)/boot/grub/calvin.xpm.gz

# I hide the menu in grub.conf so the picture shows more
default=0
timeout=15
hiddenmenu
splashimage=(hd1,1)/boot/grub/calvin.xpm.gz

# You can try several images without rebooting for each one,
# just use the different image names. For Example:
At the grub boot menu, type: c ( for command mode )
grub> root(hd1,1)
grub> splashimage /home/calvin.xpm.gz

You need to creat a new image or download one, e.g:

http://ruslug.rutgers.edu/~mcgrof/grub-images/images/

You need to place the image in your /boot/grub directory and modify your grub.conf file to use that instead of the default. See here for more instructions:

http://www.zwhlug.nl/content/grub_the_boot_splash_image_howto

Edit: oops, looks like we both posted at the same time
