View Full Version : Kernel 2.6.14 recompile error

i have updated my fedora kernel using yum.
i configured kernel and saved it.
and then i write make it shows error like this:

[root@phreak 2.6.14-1.1644_FC4-i686]# make
CHK include/linux/version.h
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `init/main.o', needed by `init/built-in.o'. Stop.
make: *** [init] Error 2
[root@phreak 2.6.14-1.1644_FC4-i686]#

Plz help me someone..

if u haven't figured this out yet the error is becuase you don't have the kernel source installed and since the source is no longer included in order to create your own u must download the kernel.src rpm and create your own

You need to copy a working configuration file (or if you already have one in place as .config) and then run:


make nonint_oldconfig

If you are running Fedora sources this should work, otherwise:


make oldconfig

Answer the questions if asked. Then, procede as normal:


make bzImage modules modules_install install

To build and install the kernel.

Note: you will need to edit /etc/grub.conf (a symlink to /boot/grub/grub.conf) and set your new kernel as the default, as the make install procedure only updates grub.conf, but does not set the new kernel as the default.
