Is it safe to erase the contents of the /var/cache/yum/ directory? I'm trying to free up some disk space and was wondering if this would hurt anything.

Maybe it's fine. However,

yum clean packageswill do what you want - ie free up disk space.

Also, read up on Managing software with Yum (http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/yum/index.html). Section 9 (http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/yum/sn-yum-maintenance.html#sn-yum-clearance) applies.

Yes, it is safe... I would recommend backing up that cache in some cds or dvd first in case you need to reinstall fedora.
