As yum has never worked for me no matter what I have tried is there any other way for me to get round the missing dependances, or where I could download them from because I have looked on google and found nothing except the occaional one that looks promising then it ends up giving me a program that uses that dependance or something similar?

use apt to correct missing dependencies read this link (http://shamsweb.50webs.com/faq.html#apt) .

Okay - being a GUI fan, I'll suggest the following:
"yum install apt"
then "yum install synaptic'
Heck, here's what works: http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_4_installation_notes.html#Apt

Do you have an x86_64 system? Apt and synaptic aren't available for x86_64 architecture.
