I have Fedora Core 4, and am sick and tired of users asking me how to fix/reinstall Grub, and me having to direct them to Recue Mode.

So, I am *trying* to put together a ISO or Floppy Image (both bootable) that users can boot form an install Grub to the MBR directly, without going via Linux.

I hear rumors about a Windows version of an ANCIENT Grub installer, named grubinstaller.exe

1) I cannot find the file
2) It needs to be updated to Grub2

Then I can add it to a bootable floppy and have it install Grub directly.

I know this is FEDORAforums, and not GRUBforums, but you guys have the best Linux Communitty I have ever seen, and I am sure that if I need help, this is where I should come to get it. ;)

GRUB comes with a helper program called 'grub-install'. Perhaps you could use that?

I checked it out. Thanks for the name, but I'm still slightly stuck.

To actually run this script, you would have to be booted into a Linux kernel..... I'm looking for a solution that would fit on a floppy, and the Linux kernel most certainly wont.

thanks though

I don't remember if Knoppix has GRUB. You can check that . If not there is this link, http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/partitioneditors.shtml . Its got some really cool recovery tools
I havn't tried this one myself since I never felt the need but this seems like the thing you are looking for http://www.toms.net/rb/
I don't think its got grub, but it will atleast get you into a linux enviornment.
Let us know if it works. I am sure many will want this kind of rescue thingy.

Thanks for the links mndar...

I will check them out and if they are what I am looking for, try my best to get compiling.
If it works out I will most certainly post a link to the development project website/download here.

Keep the suggestions coming guys ;)

Anaconda's wish list includes a more full featured rescue CD that reinstalls the bootloader (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/AnacondaWorkItems?#rescue). You'd probably want to talk to the anaconda list.

Having this on rescue mode would be very nice, you could say "Boot CD1, linux rescue, fixgrub"

I am having issues with my FC4, soon as they are fixed I will get to word developing.
I already posted asking for help on FedoraForums. Thanks guys
