I am using Fedora core 4.0 with graphical login, it does not appear to source .bash_profile when I login. Any idea how I can fix this?

Also, is there any way of switching to a text based loging method?

thanks

Shaobo

With graphical login I assume you mean X. It's the way it is supposed to work. .bash_profile is sourced when your shell is loaded. A graphical system isn't a shell. If you start a console-emulator with bash your .bash_profile will be sourced.

Make your system start in runlevel 3 by editing your /etc/inittab. Change the line
id:5:initdefault:
to

id:3:initdefault:
Runlevel 5 is X, 3 is full multiuser mode (text based).
