is it possible to install kde without the plethora of extra apps? i just installed it through the add/remove applications applet and when i went to start gaim i saw a massive number of new apps had been installed (KPPP for example) is it possible to install without these things? i wanna try it out but i dont want to have soooo many different programs that i'll never touvch...

Linux is rpm based Redhat Package Management
KDE is a package, like M/S Office 2003.

What you might do is find the Menu Editor and remove programs from the Menus (by click check boxes off)

well, i just figured out that i should have just installed kdebase. that by itself works a dream :D
