Hi, I was trying to update yum: yum update yum and everything apeared as though it went smoothly. when a buddy of mine exited the console (he said the installation was done, but im not so sure) while in xwindows. apon him exiting - all xwindows icons turned to paper icons and proceeded to crash (nothing would work). I exited xwindows and was unable to execute any commands (ie shutdown, reboot).

upon a manual restart i get
Red Hat nash version 4.2.15 starting
/bin/sh: ro: No such file or directory
Kernal panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

then it hangs forever

Ive heard someone mention a rescue cd, im checking into this, any other suggestions?
thanks so much

jeff

Yes you will want rescue mode.

Some things you will want to do are:

Check the yum logs in /var/log for what was installed/what didn't get installed.

Run
rpm -Va to verify that all the rpms are installed correctly. Any output is a difference; lots of it means something's wrong.

If you can salvage your data it may be best to reinstall a clean system.
