Just a quick note about using dd:
You can use a program called mbuffer (http://www.rcs.ei.tum.de/~maierkom/privat/software/mbuffer/) as a progress indicator, because dd does not have one.
You use it like this:

# dd if=/dev/zero | mbuffer | dd of=/dev/sda1
The output, while dd is working, is something like this:

# dd if=/dev/zero | mbuffer | dd of=/dev/sda1
in @ 179.3 kB/s, out @ 179.3 kB/s, 2710 kB total, buffer 100% full
