View Full Version : Cups server error!

30th August 2005, 11:37 AM
hi, I am in KDE environment and received these errors when i tried to configure my printer through { Preferences | More Preferences | Printing Manager }

These are the errors

unable to receive printer list. Error message received from manager:

Connection to CUPS server failed. check that the cups server is correctly installed and running.
Error : the IPP request failed for an unknown reason.

BTW, the cups is started in the services area and i have installed my HP deskjet 930 printer but unable to print anything except that i could do a test printing from { System settings | printing } and only that printing works !

Any clue ? thanks for reading

I have been struggling to find a printer for a long time.

Any idea how to reinstall the cups server?

I'm assuming you're talking about one computer, i.e. KDE and the CUPS service are both running on the same computer?

Can you get to the CUPS management web page? You should be able to do this by going to http://localhost:631 in a browser.

This should show any print jobs that have been requested.

I certainly find it easier to set up queues in the CUPS web page than the Fedora print management tools (assuming you have local root access?).

Check CUPS really is running. Restart the service (as root: "/sbin/service cups restart") and then check "/var/log/cups/error_log" and see if there are any errors.

I had this problem until I relaised that I had to log on as root and use my root password.
