OK, would like to get a new theme, say from gnome-look.org. How do I go about doing this? Hate to sound like a total noob, but never really tried to do this before.

Hello,

very simple : download the theme (.tar.gz usally), open preferences/themes, clic on add new theme and select your theme. Clic ok, and in the theme selector clic on the theme you have installed...

Any particular directory to extract to?

Don't extract the .tar.gz, the import will take care of extracting the files.

Some theme packages contain more than one theme and if you install it with the theme ui installer, you won't get all of the themes. I found that it is best to extract the theme package and then move the resulting theme(s) folders to ~/.themes. The gnome theme ui installer doesn't do a good job of installing theme packages that contain multiple themes.
