right click the panel
choose properties
you can choose auto hide or choose Show Hide Buttons this will allow the panel to move to the corner left or right see this movie I created about it. I'll post a flash movie on my site in a few minutes to show you

no no, you've misunderstood me, I don't want the panel to hide..

I just want to be able to put windows on top of that panel..

I have the panel located at the bottom, it's 32 pixes high, so when I maximize a window it's maximum height is ScreenHeight - 32px

I'm wanting to do the same thing - make the panel option to 'always be on top', false.

Any ideas on how to do it? I couldn't find the option in gconf-editor...
