In Windows XP I could edit a host file under some where in system32, so that I could add host names to internal IPs and referr to them easily. How do I do this in Linux?

yep, linux has /etc/hosts hosts.deny hosts.allow
perhaps you are referring to resolving hosts names? netbios names? window$ names?
linux has also a way of resolving computer names to IPs and vice versa, named please meet Sunnz...

in gnome applications--> system settings -->network
enter root password
click the DNS tab
next to hosts is localhost.localdomain
change that to what ever
save changes
reboot
