View Full Version : How-To: Madwifi using RPM in FC2
STiAT

Since my harddisk crashed (headcrash), i had to set up fedora and within that madwifi again. Because i didn't feel like compiling my kernel again, and building the madwifi driver myself, i used the RPMs of ATRPMs this time. I know there have been around other RPMs for FC2 too, but they disappeared of the responsitory of the provider for some reason i dont know. Therefore i used ATRPMs.
1) Download the needed RPMs at ATrpms.net. First of all you will need the ATRPM-Package tools:
32bit arch
http://download.atrpms.net/production/packages/fedora-2-i386/atrpms/atrpms-55-1.rhfc2.at.i386.rpm
64bit arch
http://download.atrpms.net/production/packages/fedora-2-i386/atrpms/atrpms-55-1.rhfc2.at.x86_64.rpm
After this download the Kernel Modules fitting your individual Kernel:
http://www.atrpms.net/dist/fc2/madwifi/
madwifi-0.8.5.5-7.rhfc2.at.* (download the file for your architecture)
kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.5-1.358* (download the file fitting your architecture and kernel)
2) Install the atrpms-55 package
rpm -i atrpms-55-1.rhfc2.at.*
3) Install the kernel module and driver package:
rpm -i kernel-module-kernel-module-madwifi*
rpm -i madwifi-0.8.5.5-7.rhfc2.at.*
4) edit your /etc/modprobe.conf, add the line
alias ath0 ath_pci
5) create a file named ifcfg-ath0 in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
STARTMODE=hotplug
DEVICE=ath0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
WIRELESS=yes
MODE=Managed
ESSID=any
IPV6INIT=no
onBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=no
6) ifconfig ath0 up
7) ifup ath0
This should make your card working fine. If you have problems with step6 i recommend to reboot the machine once.
Enjoy

Thanks for the great howto - this is the first time I have been able to get my wg311 to work with FC, was very helpful. I do have one question: I was originally on 2.6.6-1.435.2.3 when I installed Apt, but it declared that the madwifi driver was dependent on 2.6.6-1.427 and d/l'd that version of the kernel. Under the 427 build my WG311 works like a charm, and I have all my conf and rc.d files the way I want them. However, even though I have since upgraded through Apt and it shows a clean update, the madwifi driver doesn't work with anything but the 427 build - under any later build it says it says ath0 doesn't exist and won't initialize. I am to the point that I am comfortable configuring and existing install, but upgrading and kernels are still kind of voodoo to me. I have looked everywhere and can't find any discussions on this issue. Is there something I need to do so that later builds will work with the madwifi driver? Any insights would be greatly appeciated (I wasn't sure what would be helpful to post, just let me know and I will). Thanks!

Get new RPMs from ATRPMs that match your new kernel and install using rpm -i. That way, your old drivers will remain. You will have to do this for every kernel update.

Hi all,
The above posts sounded like a great resource to get madwifi to work using the rpms. I have been trying to do that. I am a complete newbie in the Linux world.
I am using FC 2 with kernel 2.6.7-1.1smp. Due to some network restriction I can't connect to CVS so my alternative is the rpm files. My problem is I am not even sure which rpms to download for this kernel.
I tried with a few of them one being the
"kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp-0.8.5-7.rhfc2.at.i686.rpm"
but I end up getting the error message saying
error: Failed dependencies :
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp is needed by kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp-0.8.5.5-7.rhfc2.at
kernel-smp = 2.6.7-1.494.2.2 is neededby kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp-0.8.5.5-7.rhfc2.at
Does any body know how to solve this problem? ANy suggestion what so ever at all.....
I will really appriciate your kind help.
Thanks in advance.

i've completed steps 1-6 with no errors(well 1 that i've since corrected). now i'm stuck again. upon doing step 7 in your nice little checklist i get "ifup ath0 failed". i get a similar message when using the Network Adapters Config from KDE and trying to activate the devices("Determining IP Information for Ath0 Failed"). the Network Adapters Config shows two devices in it's list(1 Artheos wireless adapter and 1 ethernet adapter). their identities are ath0 and eth0. i checked the hardware tab and the adapter tab and found that neither have the following information:
Mem
IO
IO1
IO2
DMA0
DMA1
i was able to ascertain the IRQ settings with KDE's System Information. also, i'm running kernel 2.6.7-1.499_7 and the associated plug in module for that kernel on a Dell Dimension R-450, ATI Radian 7000, IBM and Seagate HD's, SB Live 5.1, USR dialup modem, MSI combo DVD/CDRW drive, and Dlink webcam. any help with the other values would be of great assistance as this would i'm sure complete the configuration or a few more steps thereafter. thanks again guys. i have a problem with the sound card and webcam but that is another story altogether.

really useful info
OMG THANK YOU!!!!
I have been recoving from losing my mandrake, which i was quite attached to and had my atheros card setup in, but this time doing what i planned for a while and setting up a multi-boot with fedora, debian and mandrake (know mandrake, liked idea of debian with apt-get and fedora so that i could install and use mono easily because it is officially supported).
anyway ... i have had trouble getting the wireless working with debian (among other issues), had a great time with fedora & couldnt be bothered with mandrake just yet .... cos the one thing in the world i needed was wireless on the 2 i had on to dump the wires.
i'd got the apt for rpm sorted but madwifi wasnt working
found this thread
and .... omg it worked & the wires are gone!!!!!!!!
I am so happy i signed up to the forums just to babble all that and bookmarked it in case I had other issues, so I could be hanging around. :)

why donesn't the distro enable module versioning support by default so we can use our old drivers and it would make new kernel installs alot easier.
Because some of these drivers require specialized "hooks" into the OS (through the kernel-module) and when the kernel changes, those hooks need to be rebuilt as well.
If you're thinking of what goes on in the Windows-world, remember there is no such thing as a "kernel upgrade." The actual OS runtime, down deep in the bowels of Redmond, does not change - only when you "upgrade" the entire OS do you get to switch out "engines." Here, not only can we swap "engines," but we can tweak the hell out of it - if we want to.
Hmm... I wonder if a Hemi 4-barrel with Nitrous boost and a blower would work on my system. ;)

ok...now my terminal session is telling me that ifconfig is an unrecognized command...and iwconfig is too...and I su'ed and still nothing...I cd'ed to /sbin and tried to run the files...still to no avail...what am I doing wrong?
also I can go into system network config..and I see ath0 but also eth1 as well as my nic eth0. ath0 is of type unknown and eth1 is ethernet. that's as far as I can get.....

you obviously have to set the key, you cant just magically connect...
edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0

Hi nir,
The problem is the madwifi kernel module you are attempting to use (kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp-0.8.5.5-7.rhfc2.at) doesn't match the kernel that you are using (2.6.7-1.1smp).
To resolve this problem you could either:
1) Use kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.7-1.1smp (if it exists!) OR
2) upgrade your kernel to 2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp
If you need help with 2), search the forums, or start a new thread in the forum.

Hello! :)
I'm a new fedora core 2 user and I'm very impressed by this great operating system and I would like it to become my main OS. I'm an experienced windows user who want's to pass to linux but I have a big problem to able to enjoy my fedora core 2 experience: :(
I have desktop pc, with a wireless D-link DWL-G520 rev.A and my fedora core 2 system cannot detect it. :(
I have read this clear HOW-TO but when I try the links for the ATRPM-Package tools they didn't work, seems like the destination files have change places... :confused:
Then I tried to download the kernel modules at atrpms.net under the fedora core 2 distribution but there are so many files, wich one to use? Do you have any advice to be able to choose the right files? :confused:
What I did for the moment is move my pc in range of my router to be able to connected by wire and get the latest updates for fedora core 2(workstation config). (but this is not the best solution for me :( )
Thank you very much for your time and for working hard for us the new guys.
Have a nice day! ;)

Ok... :D
I think I found the Kernel Modules for my kernel: 2.6.8-1.521 :cool:
- madwifi-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i386.rpm (is the latest file I found)
- kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.8-1.521-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i686.rpm (for my kernel version and architecture: i686)
(I found them at http://atrpms.net) http://atrpms.net/dist/fc2/madwifi/
For the ATRPM-Package tools = atrpms-60-1.at.noarch.rpm (http://download.atrpms.net/production/packages/fedora-2-i386/atrpms/atrpms-60-1.at.noarch.rpm)
(watch out for this one, it keeps changing, I got the atrpms-59 and now it is: atrpms-60) go to this link and download the latest version in case this link doesn't work: atrpms-XX-1.at.noarch.rpm (http://download.atrpms.net/production/packages/fedora-2-i386/atrpms/))
Now that I have a better understanding (after hours of reading) I will try to make it work. If I encounter any problems I let you know... ;)

angelu, & Picomp314; its seems you two are the most knowledgeable on this subject.
I have replaced my Linksys WMP54GS PCI WiFi card for the DLink DWL-G520 (Extreme G) model - thinking and hoping that it'll work with Fedora Core2 (Note: No updates have EVER been done, no internet connection - Ethernet port is fried).
Now I've downloaded the following:
madwifi-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i386.rpm
ATRPM-Package tools
Now I'm royally screwed and confused on how to use the terminal (command line) to setup the following. Going nuts here because I'm using my work's internet access to research after my shift and findout what it is I need to do. I'm a complete newb - only afraid at new endeavors at the command line. Can ANYONE walk me through a step by step of installing to finally get this DWL -G520 card to work? Oh yeah its Rev A.
The Thread at this location (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2137) is seriously confusing because the card is different so I don't know what to substitue or what I should be seeing from FC2 as a response to my commands in terminal.
I Hardware Browser in Gnome gui doesn't see it; I know it works because in WinXP SP1 on the other partition it works sweetly - I want this to work in FC2 - this would enable me to connect to my Sisters WiFi AP to update Fedora.
PS - why is it Linux is so difficult for us newbs? The rest of us would love to use it if threads explanations would state what someone entered or how the specifically got their setup to work?

Hello here is another HOW-TO in details for all the NEWBIES outhere. I will use my self in this example.
My details:
OS = FEDORA CORE 2
kernel = 2.6.8-1.521
NIC = DWL-G520 rev.A (I also have a DWL-G650 rev.B)
Architecture = i686
1) First of all you need to identify your hardware and software.
a) HARDWARE = Check and see if you have an atheros chipset in your NIC.
Go to this link : http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=357
If you found out that you need MADWIFI then continue reading this HOW-TO.
(***I know I have the DWL-G520 rev.A, I clicked on the link and I found my self in the http://sourceforge.net/projects/madwifi website that means I need MADWIFI***)
b) Check what kernel version you have.
Type this command in a terminal window to find out : uname -r
(***I have kernel 2.6.8-1.521 ; I take note of that***)
c) For the architecture, most of today computers work on i686.
2) Now that you know that you need MADWIFI and your kernel version.
Download the needed RPMs at http://atrpms.net/dist/fc2/madwifi/
- ATRPM-Package tools = atrpms-60-1.at.noarch.rpm (http://download.atrpms.net/production/packages/fedora-2-i386/atrpms/atrpms-60-1.at.noarch.rpm)

- madwifi-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i386.rpm (http://download.atrpms.net/production/packages/fedora-2-i386/atrpms/madwifi-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i386.rpm) (is the latest file I found)
- kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.8-1.521-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i686.rpm (http://download.atrpms.net/production/packages/fedora-2-i386/atrpms/kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.8-1.521-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i686.rpm) (for my kernel version and architecture: i686)
3) open a terminal window, go to super user mode: su
4) Install ATRPM-Package tools
rpm -i atrpms-60-1.at.noarch.rpm
5) Install kernel module and driver package:
rpm -i kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.8-1.521-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i686.rpm
rpm -i madwifi-0.9.3.1-11.rhfc2.at.i386.rpm
6) Edit your /etc/modprobe.conf,
add the line = alias ath0 ath_pci
(*** I like to use the program: gedit, so I type: gedit /etc/modprobe.conf ;then I add line in the top, save the file and exit***)
7) create a file named ifcfg-ath0 in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
(***type this in the ifcfg-ath0 file***)
STARTMODE=hotplug
DEVICE=ath0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp (*** remove dhcp if you use static IP)
WIRELESS=yes
MODE=Managed
ESSID= xxxx (***name of your network***)
IPV6INIT=no
onBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=no
CHANNEL=6 (***default channel***)
KEY=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (***if you use WEP if you don't use it don't add this line ***)
(***if you use a statit IP adress add this lines: ***)
NETMASK= xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ex:255.255.255.0)
IPADDR= xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ex:192.168.0.2)
GATEWAY= xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ex:192.168.0.1)
(*** I like to use the program: gedit, so I type: gedit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0 ;then it will ask me to create the file, I say yes, I edit the file, save and exit***)
7) /sbin/ifconfig ath0 up
8) /sbin/ifup ath0
note: if you have problems with the last commands restart your computer. ;)

I have tried rebooting but nothing changes. Can anybody give me some good advice as to what to check for here?

you have to load the modules
with modprobe
If you mean adding ath0 to modprobe.conf, then I have already done that.
Anything else I should do with it. Do I have to run the modprobe command with some special flags?
Picomp314
14th November 2004, 07:40 PM
use those, it is possible that your modprobe.conf is not correct if the modules arent loading
you can check with the command /sbin/lsmod
if they arent there use these commands to load them
/sbin/modprobe wlan.ko
/sbin/modprobe ath_hal.ko
/sbin/modprobe ath_pci.ko

Any one have any luck getting FC 3 final up with kernel 2.6.9-1.667 with the madwifi? Every time I load the madwifi as per PiComp and Stait's instructions the kernel crashes when trying to load the drivers from startup :mad: Particulars follow:
AMD Athlon 2800+
512MB RAM
120G hard drive
80G hard drive
MSI Motherboard with Nvidia Chipset
DLink DWL-G520 Wireless NIC
FC 3 is loaded up as a dual boot configuration. No problems with FC3 as long as I don't load the Atheros drivers. As soon as I load the drivers FC3 crashes :mad: Appreciate any ideas or help I can get. Thanks to PiComp and Stait for their previous help with getting the NIC to work with FC2 :D
Sincerely

I have the same issue with FC1 where it won't find ath0 as a valid device. All i have in my modprobe.conf is:
include /etc/modprobe.conf.dist
alias ath0 ath_pci
alias eth0 tg3
The weird thing is, that it will start and connect to my access point automatically if I reboot!!
ifconfig says that it is eth1, and the gnome utility says the same. I'm just happy it works so, i'll leave it as eth1. :) My next task is to make it work with Kismet.

Hi all,
The above posts sounded like a great resource to get madwifi to work using the rpms. I have been trying to do that. I am a complete newbie in the Linux world.
I am using FC 2 with kernel 2.6.7-1.1smp. Due to some network restriction I can't connect to CVS so my alternative is the rpm files. My problem is I am not even sure which rpms to download for this kernel.
I tried with a few of them one being the
"kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp-0.8.5-7.rhfc2.at.i686.rpm"
but I end up getting the error message saying
error: Failed dependencies :
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp is needed by kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp-0.8.5.5-7.rhfc2.at
kernel-smp = 2.6.7-1.494.2.2 is neededby kernel-module-madwifi-2.6.7-1.494.2.2smp-0.8.5.5-7.rhfc2.at
Does any body know how to solve this problem? ANy suggestion what so ever at all.....
I will really appriciate your kind help.
Thanks in advance.

i'm not sure what other info to post. hopefully this is enough. btw the lights on the d-link are showing activity. alternating blinking + blinking at same time. this started after installing madwifi. dont think this is a hardware issue but i'm gonna reboot to winXP and verify the card works over there. (fyi wlan seems to operate fine, ive used this same laptop with winXP & Netgear WG511 v2. I bought D-Link for Linux since the WG511v2 uses Marvell chipset. Also have 2 other Windoze PC on the WLAN with no hiccups).
Did I use an incorrect rpm??
Yes sharutil installed

You only need to install 2 things to make the madwifi work maybe the first package is that one giving you problems. D-Link uses atheros drivers and this is how I did it. (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43718)

HI all... First of all, thanks for the howto and the rest of the comments. Very useful! I'm a bit stuck though... I am using kernel 2.6.7-1.494.2.2 which I later updated to stack 16 (16stck) so that my video card worked ok. Problem now is I don't seem to find the appropriate rpm to get my wifi card working with this particular kernel! and it's driving me crazy... I don't find any kernel-module-madwifi.....16stk.....rpm or madwifi.....rpm and my dependencies always fail because of that. Any suggestions, pliiiiiiis :( ? I don't really want to update my kernel since I took me ages to get this far and I need my laptop for my work. Can I just compile tne drivers rather than using rpm?? Anybody seen the source code??
Thanks a lot in advance
