View Full Version : Oh no ! Polkit

Yesterday I posted on another thread, that it is really annoying to get these Polkit popups every time I want to do anything more than type a letter, say add a new printer. Or even whenever I launch konqueror to do some file copying, KDE had somehow thought centralizing all your passwords in a "wallet" was a good idea, and provides a popup to "unlock" yout wallet and voilla there comes polkit with its 2 dialog boxes, one below the other, which actually hide themselves behind the KDE stuff (or it's the KDE stuff that says " I wanna be on top")... Anyway, the annoy factor is ASTOUNDING !

So, I have today, after my morning crash party, which has subsided for the time being, decided to go and kill this polkit, pervasive little annoyance.
So the first thing I did is go in as root, and annoy the little annoyance by:

mv /etc/polkit-1/ /etc/polkit-1.DISABLED
mv etc/xdg/autostart/xfce-polkit.desktop /home/bobx/cr4p/
mv /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd.DISABLED

Then I rebooted and tailed /var/log/messages, to see all the invaded software that depends on that little annoyance.

- nova systemd[1]: polkit.service: Unit entered failed state
- nova dbus-daemon[815]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1' unit='polkit.service' requested by ':1.1' (uid=0 pid=801 comm="/usr/libexec/rtkit-daemon ")
- nova NetworkManager[867]: <error> [1514030791.9217] auth: could not get polkit proxy: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms)
- nova journal[811]: Error initializing polkit authority: Error initializing authority: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms) (g-dbus-error-quark, 20)
- nova systemd-coredump[3199]: Process 3174 (Web Content) of user 1000 dumped core.#012#012Stack trace of thread 3181:#012#0 0x00007f8ff05fa913 _ZN7mozilla3ipc14MessageChannel22OnChannelErrorFro mLinkEv (libxul.so)

so then I tried with: systemctl disable polkit.service
rebooted, came back, and same thing. Log into Xfce was literally impossible.

Then I went one step further:
dnf remove polkit, which literally killed Xfce, so I had to switch to LXDE. Ahh that seems to somehow work. Great !

Let's see if all works normal from now on, and I will add whatever I find here that does not work or is somehow tainted.
Interestingly enough FF seems to work without polkit on LXDE, however it wasn't working on Xfce with a crippled polkit.

All this above basically points out , just like there is a user called "boycottsystemd" , that we should not just accept unilateral invasion of our privacy without at least a bit of resistance. IMHO Polkit has invaded too much of the system, to the point of becoming an annoyance, at which point people like me SNAP, and go somewhere else.
