I did a fresh install of F27 (F26 had stopped working with cinnamon) and installed cinnamon. Even though Cinnamon showed up as an option to start in it opened with gnome. Discovered that there are two versions of cinnamon 3.4 and 3.6. Tried the cinnamon spin but it would not boot even after setting boot from my dvd as the option in bios. re-installed F27 from dvd. Can anyone advise as to how I can get cinnamon (and which version) to work. Command line is prefereable.

Thanks

If you install the xorg-x11-xinit-session package via dnf you can select "custom script" at the login screen, this should launch a basic xorg sesssion. Then add whatever the command is to run cinnamon to ~/.xsession.

Try

sudo dnf update
sudo dnf install @cinnamon-desktop
sudo systemctl disable gdm
sudo systemctl enable lightdm

Wrong, there is only 3.6.x :)

Why would you need to do this?, there isn't anything wrong with the cinnamon session files.
GDM eats babies and xorg sessions IMO :)

Thanks Leigh. It's working fine. Great work.

Why would you need to do this?

I've never used Cinnamon, however using the user script allows me to fire commands to X before my window manager starts. For example if I need to run xrandr to resize Window Maker I can do so via ~/.xsession before the screen draws, if I do it in Window Maker's autostart it's launched after X has started and the resize is visible.

Did you try "Netinstall Images"? I used it to install Cinnamon Spin, and I love it a lot.
