I'm trying to install some new brother printer drivers and the guide (written for redhat 9) says i need to cd into

/tmp/lpr

I'm running fedora 2 with kernel 2.6.10 and lpr does not appear to be in the tmp directory.

is the /usr/bin/lpr path the one i need?

You need to add it to you printer configuration.

Sorry backroger I don't quite know what you mean.

My printer works with the generic drivers provided by CUPS though in order to use the full configuration options that my printer allows I need to install the "official" drivers from brother who detail that the installation must be started from the LPR folder.

am I missing something?

The Brother instructions don't take CUPS into account - they're obviously pretty old. You'll either need to install the LPRng package (after removing CUPS) and try again, or keep messing with it (or find something via Google) until you get it to work like you want it to. Or ask Brother support for help.
