Haven't come across this previously so am asking for some help please

wanted to upgrade from 25 to 26 but after entering 'sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=26'

I got this message 'At least 2970MB more space needed on the / filesystem.'

You could try this:

sudo journalctl --vacuum-size 100M
Does this free up more space?
Also check in /var/cache/PackageKit for older distribution cached packages and remove them.

Thanks for the reply, tried both but not working

You removed all folders/files from /var/cache/PackageKit? That's usually the biggest issue- Software will download all of it separate from dnf and keep it all.

Question, how big is your / partition ?
I usually give it 50GB.

Many thanks, it worked ok and installed 26 when I deleted all the files as suggested

Thanks for your help

Thank you a lot. This two steps have helped me freed up my space by 8.5GB. I had PackageKit from v24 to v28.
