I installed Fedora 27 KDE spin workstation, then these

vlc
mplayer
kplayer
smplayer
ffmpeg
ffmpeg-libs
libavdevice
alsa-plugins-freeworld
libdvdread
libdvdnav
libdvdcss

trying to play a DVD resulted only in the DVD Title showing in the lower left of VLC and the disk spinning up as expected. But then
nothing happens and the disk spins to a stop. I found these in the 'dmesg'

[ 1800.302798] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] tag#7 FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[ 1800.302801] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] tag#7 Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[ 1800.302803] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] tag#7 Add. Sense: Read of scrambled sector without authentication
[ 1800.302805] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] tag#7 CDB: Read(10) 28 00 00 37 a9 40 00 00 01 00
[ 1800.302806] print_req_error: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 14591232
[ 1800.302809] Buffer I/O error on dev sr0, logical block 3647808, async page read

then I got suspicious, the disk I was trying to play was a brand new 2017 movie from netflix. I guessed it might
be that a new disk might have some kind of new protection. I got out an old NCIS Tv series disk
and that played fine. So is this a problem, that VLC even in Fedora 27 can't play really recent disks?

post the output for the failed disk.

vlc --verbose 2

Here it is

vlc --verbose 2

VLC media player 3.0.0-git Vetinari (revision 2.2.0-git-14804-g7c04db8c27)
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 5.0.3
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdnav: DVD Title: THE_5TH_WAVE
libdvdnav: DVD Serial Number: 48689029
libdvdnav: DVD Title (Alternative):
libdvdnav: DVD disk reports itself with Region mask 0x00fe0000. Regions: 1

Another thing I noticed, even with the old NCIS disk that does play, the drive spins so loud and fast the video is unwatchable, it's weird because the actual video playback speed is normal. The stdout from vlc shows this while the disk is playing noisily

Where did you get libdvdcss?

libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.

rpm -q --info libdvdcss

rpm -q --info libdvdcss

Finally went on rpmfind and got it working with this one below, for some reason I had the rpm from livna only downloaded as a file but not installed.
