View Full Version : [SOLVED] Lost GUI (Mate) after recent update

Running Mate UI on F26 x64. Attempted to do the recent F26 system update and got error msgs about webkitgtk4 conflict problems. It seems my system had both i686 and x86_64 installed. I redid the update excluding webkitgtk4 and update went fine. I then tried to correct the webkitgtk4 problem by deleting the i686 version. When I did that, the system rebooted and came back to the CLI. Tried a reboot and no GUI.

Any ideas about what I (inadvertently) did and suggestions about how to get things working right again (w/out doing full reinstall :(

Thx in advance...cheers....

are you able to login? Is lightdm login screen not accessible?

Press ctrl+alt+F2. You will see tty2 and can login command line from there. and see status of lightdm service

systemctl status lightdm

If shows error post it.

Also check if you didn't accidently removed lightdm. Try installing it

sudo dnf install lightdm

It will install or show you that it is installed.

Sorry if it wasn't clear. Yes, I could log in as both user and root.

lightdm was installed, but for some reason it had been disabled (maybe as a result of trying to straighten out the webkitgtk4 issue). Started/enabled the service and everything was back to normal.

Thx much for the quick response and help on solving my issue.

Cheer....
