I stumbled across the first answer in this thread (http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/205058/how-to-disable-the-user-list-on-gdm3-login-screen) other day and used the method to apply a couple of useful settings at login. Just do the first two steps, then run the following commands. The results are what you would expect from the commands, and they take effect at the login screen.

$ GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.keyboard numlock-state on

$ GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.touchpad send-events 'disabled-on-external-mouse'

I'm sure there are other useful commands.
