Some background first:
- Fedora 23
- Sony Xperia z5, Android 6.0
- default file manager
- USB (via hub) connection

I'm trying to get get at data on my phone using Fedora 23.

The system seems to see the phone:
[68398.226041] usb 3-2.4.4: new high-speed USB device number 12 using xhci_hcd
[68398.301608] usb 3-2.4.4: New USB device found, idVendor=0fce, idProduct=51d9
[68398.301617] usb 3-2.4.4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[68398.301621] usb 3-2.4.4: Product: E6653
[68398.301625] usb 3-2.4.4: Manufacturer: Sony
[68398.301628] usb 3-2.4.4: SerialNumber: BH90EL7P4D

Indeed if I open banshee I can see Xperia Z5 listed there, but I've no idea if that is the phone internal memory or the additional SD card I added.

With previous phone (Z1) I could access phone storage as a filesystem to read/write files (of particular interest was the Banshee .is_audio_player).

After some internet browsing I've installed various MTP packages and tried various incantations of simplemtp and setting permissions on the /mnt/xperia folder I'm trying to use with simplemtp

Any suggestions what I'm missing?

For mounting with simple-mtpfs, you may have to kill gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor before plugging in the phone. I do not know what this is for.

Killed gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor processes
Started simple-mtpfs
Plugged phone in.... nothing.

Then it occurred to me it may be SELinux getting in the way, so instead of creating a directory as root and setting permissions on that directory I created a dir in /home/<user> which was created by that user. Still no luck.

Did you try jmtpfs yet? It runs with "jmtpfs <mountpoint>"

If you use KDE, you can also install kio_mtp to access the phone in Dolphin.

After installing and running jmtpfs as suggested, I get the following error fr4om the defaulot file explorer:
"Error when getting information for file '/home/dafoot/phone': Input/output error"

Additionally the phone keeps popping up the dialog to select connection mode, I can select one and it will pretty much instantly pop up again.

All the while I am unable to read files on phone.

Perhaps it is obvious, but did you check that in phone the USB selected option is "MTP Transfer"? Android 6.0 use "Only charge" as default when you connect a phone to a computer via USB.

Read through that and tried simple-mtpfs again as a result, that seems to work now.
Mayby something got fixed in an update :/
