I'm not in love with Gnome 3 and wouldn't mind trying out Mate. Does installing the Mate spin make more sense or is installing the standard Gnome 3 out of box and then adding Mate to it just fine?

Does the Mate spin have an advantage over the standard install and then adding Mate after the fact?

Besides time saving (as you already have the DE you're installing afterwards), and maybe a few packages less installed... nope (as in: not really).

I always install Mate spin and love it. Why would you want all the Gnome 3 baggage if you are not going to use it?

I like the Mate spin if I know I'm not going to install Gnome 3. Since there are nVidia / X issues with Gnome 3 in F23, installing the Mate Spin makes sense (I like it, the F23 Mate Spin is great!). And, I never know which services I really need to autostart when both Gnome 3 and Mate are installed.
