Hi, what's that youtube application?
Because you're so enthusiastic I'll post my desktop too.
http://i57.tinypic.com/2hygruu.png
It is nothing fancy though because it is a fairly fresh installation.
The background comes from the just released Patterned Wallpapers (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/919/patterned-wallpapers/) extension (this one is actually a bit harsh on the eyes but looks great in the overview).
At the left I got the dash to dock extension and at the bottem Plank (http://wiki.go-docky.com/index.php?title=Plank:Introduction) is shown (a bit redundant but I like the different behavior, is lightweight and it works in other DE).
I think I am starting to get a bit bored with the default icons so I'll probably install the Ultra Flat Icon (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ultra-Flat-Icons?content=167477) pack.

edit - file attachments are broken and have been for a while. the forum has been moved to a new type of server (Amazon) so some teething problems being ironed out still.

Here's my latest. MATE-Compiz with a Porsche 918 slideshow. The slideshows are basic XML scripts. you create a folder with the images in, add the script and select the XML file (I copied the F21-extras file and modified it) when you click the +Add button in the background dialogue.

I've been playing around with MATE-Compiz panel backgrounds this morning. I've used GIMP to make an 8 pixel strip transparent and chamfered the line to meet the mintmenu button which I couldn't get the background to go transparent on. Also the application drawer I've added to my panel now on the right has a borrowed icon which may be familiar to some Android users. I tried having it on the left with mintmenu working off the drawer. It looked pretty good but it caused the drawer amnesia. After restarting the notebook the drawer was empty when mintmenu was in it.

@Dutchy - MATE is begging to be tweaked. Whether I improved on it or not is down to individual taste. The themes, icons and mintmenu are all in Fedora repos. the exceptions being the Google app and drawer icons.

So it was really just fine tuning the panel background png I made to tie it all together that took a bit of trial and error. I'm not one for widgets and docks on the desktop, so this layout suits my needs.

As the package maintainer raveit65 has in his profile sig. "Life's too short for boring desktops"

Sorry if it may look a bit “cheesy” (to you), but the osx buttons are more like a transition phase for me. However, this is a test install in VBox I'm doing for my 2 nephews. They have a Mac (my brother's) and I'm about to give them a desktop each (of older used hardware). So, to make it easier for them, there's the docky and the buttons. Else it's Cinnamon, with the “Ciliora-Prima” theme and the Fedora icons. And some stuff is just installed as test and won't make it to their computers. There are still a few things I need to work out before I can do the real installation. But, I'll get there. ^^

Not cheesy at all. That's kind of the point of any good desktop environment. It should just work in the style you want or the user is accustomed to.

Yes, I can can do that - put down my install notes. Tomorrow or something if thats ok (on my way to bed now).

Also, if that's ok to do so since it's enabling the feature that was removed for a reason? ...eg, will I break any forum rule(s) if I do that?

If it's enabling features that were removed, then no, you won't be breaking any forum rules.

Mainly as long as it's not giving ways to hack into someone else's systems, you will be ok in what you post :)

Edit:

It is pretty much common courtesy to note any dangers, pitfalls, etc... that you know of when posting instructions, though. Even though it's pretty much "every man for himself" when using guides or instructions found on the internet, it's nice if someone notes issues in the instructions they post.

Something about those icons kinda put me off, and I finally figured out what it is. Not only are they flatly two dimentional, but with no shading, they remind me of the bad old days when busted video drivers defaulted Windows 3.10 to 8 ugly colors. Everything looked like it had been designed by a visually impaired ten-year-old with the small (8) color box of crayons.

Admittedly, there are more than eight colors there ... but the effect is much the same in their coloring-book flat two dimensional appearance. Sort of, "Icons by Fisher-Price®".

Ayup. I like those a lot better. <..:thumb:..> I guess to my perceptions at least, there is a definite difference between the simplicity of current trends (especially in "mobile friendly" web pages etc. -- ie. accuweather.com's recent change) and the simplicity of a refined elegance.

And whilst we're on that subject, there is a special place in H-e-double-toothpicks reserved for web/interface designers who think it's "kinda cool" to use interfaces with light grey (or non-existent) borders with light grey small point-size san-serif fonts on white or off-white backgrounds. Many erroneous assumptions are made by those with young eyes who are unduly enamored with the products of their own imaginations.

The icons are what Korora offers as an option. I use Korora Gnome and switched to Adwaita (Easiest to do via Gnome tweak tool)

chantrongchien's layout is quite nice and functional. I like the analogue clock.

I LIKE the ribbon (panel) at the bottom of the screen. It is like a ribbon presentation. Too bad I don't know how to convert that flat inline layout to a ribbon mode.

Since that presentation is so practical, why can't all distributions offer a ribbon style of menu.

I wonder what a greyish symbol for sunny in Havant implies, mostly sun with a bit of cloud covering ?
If so, very neat and symmetrical.
Perhaps there is a way of combining sun, cloud, fog, rain, hail, snow, wind, thunder and lightening in one neat symmetrical symbol, it would be popular with professional forecasters.

actually if you venture away from GNOME to XFCE or MATE it is very easy to create a ribbon style menu using a custom panel layout. The layout I use isn't standard either by any means. Pretty much all GUI elements have had some attention. You can craft your screen to suit your specific needs very easily. Just explore the panel options next time you are sat in front of the PC ;)

Of course you can load docky or plank in GNOME too. I just find xcfe and MATE easier to customise

Hi Mike

This weekend is Grand Prix weekend at Montreal. We can hear the engines from miles away.
The cars were out for touching on our Crescent street, an open area downtown, where everyone comes to gawk, to get free samples of whatever. Its almost Carnival in nature.

The track is on an island, but with a few tall buildings around, one can see the races from about 1km away.

With binoculars and zoom lenses, things are OK for pictures.

indeed, Montreal GP Weekend is a lot of fun. I actually went one year, the Montreal people are very welcoming and make the event the success it is. I'm in the process of uploading a whole miriad of images from this weekend's action which I'll link to at some point. I've still got images to sort through and crop.

There were six different classes of vehicles racing non-stop from midday to 7pm on Sunday so it was very full on. I was able to meet my favourite drivers from the main Touring Car Championship and get up close to their cars in the pit lane and paddock before the races, so we had a bit of banter and some new autographs for the collection as well. It was amazing just how much access you are allowed right up to an hour before the first race. Even after that the drivers go on a parade lap on the back of a truck, meet and greet sponsors and dignitaries. The weather was pretty much perfect if a little too hot for some people. The guy next to us needed medical attention.

The better halfs and the kids spent most the day on and off the rides and kept in the shade of the paddock and restaurant while my Father and I watched the racing from the Old Hall grandstand and trackside.

So, after looking at all the desktops I started to wounder why mine was so plain. I started playing with buttons and menus and discovered "Docky" which is just about 5 buttons on mine but still. This forum is how I learn new stuff. But I went beyond that and started messing with the cube thing in compiz or whatever it is. I hit the wrong ctrl-alt button and both monitors just went black. So I jumped up out of my computer chair and ran circles around my living room in pure panic@!! After trying a bunch of crtl-alt buttons I remembered a post on here with the instructions to startx. So thats what I did after I calmed down and logged into the terminal.....then I restarted and came back to finish looking at all the cool desktops. Man, talk about a workout...LOL

I use Blue-Submarine for the window controls and GUI with compiz enabled. The Emerald window decorations are Blue_Planet from Emerald by some bloke called arehtykitna. The icons are ravefinity's Vivacious-Non-Mono-Blue-Vivid (I think that's the variant). They aren't available from Fedora repositories but are free to download and install.

If you can't find one you like, why not tweak one of the provided themes? You can customise the palette using the Custom button in MATE for example when selecting a theme.

Well, i have several years of fedora under my belt but I just used it doing the basics. To be honest until I found this forum I had no idea about half the stuff that could be done. I mean its like some people took actual photographs and made those their desktop backgrounds with all sorts of custom docs and buttons. I am amazed and now im going to try to make mine look fancy too. It may end up being a fresh install before its over but that wont be my first fresh install...LOL

a DE is only as powerful as the human sat in front of it who configured it. In normal daily use many of us only use a tiny percentage of the features available to us. I'm still finding new tricks with MATE too. glad you found something you like though with fvwm.

You are correct that every use case is different and i also think that these window managers are becoming old as newer tech like wayland arrives. MATE is in transition state like GNOME3 is since F14. I am waiting for full transition to complete. Have one machine for MATE and one for XFCE. I do not fully understand the implications of the changes.

antikythera
30th December 2016, 04:38 PM
the transition is from GTK+2 to GTK+3 started with Fedora 23 and in F25 it is 99.9% complete. all packages are compiled in GTK+3 for this release. sure there are a few niggles that still need ironing out but it works reasonably well as a DE. The stumbling blocks I have faced are due to components from other DE I use (bluez from GNOME in particular).

Wow, a Solaris CDE theme? That takes me back! CDE wasn't great, but I'd still prefer to use it over Windows.

Just finished an F28 Gnome install. I proceeded to install i3wm and subquently removed Gnome from my system.

It was quite some time I tried some themes, mainly because I (seriously!) like Adwaita and it's clear, almost clearlooks-like looks, just a bit more flat.
Then I came across the Adapta theme, very flat material-design-like theme. I also found out how devoted the people behind it really are. It's very professionally designed, with attention to practically every detail. There is even GTK4 theme already.
Comes with smaller and dark variant and also with shell theme as well.

It's accompanied by the Papirus icon theme. Well, that one is likely the most complete icon theme ever made... The effort behind the quality and sheer number of those icons is quite something.

I like Adwaita and I liked Clearlooks before it. The only time I think I really liked and used other theme was with in the days of Nodoka for GTK2.

I have to say I love it so far. I've been using for the last week or so and I don't think I will go back to Adwaita anytime soon. ;)
EPEL even packaged it for RHEL and friends, so it must have some weight.
It comes with GTK2 variant as well, which is important for QT4 and QT5 apps, so the whole experience is coherent. qtconfig-qt4 respects the gtk2 style and applies it, while qt5ct needs qt5-qtstyleplugins to be installed and 'gtk2' set as a stlye, otherwise no Adapta mimics as it doesn't support GTK3 either.

The wallpaper used is not related to the theme. I got it, well, don't know where. Changed brightness and color to fit the overall atmosphere of the theme.
Sadly, the JPG compression had it's fun with it and the png is too big, sorry about that.

Shell theme I use is the dark variant.
The top-left window on the 2nd screen is really pcmanfm (qt5 version), because I like it more than nautilus.
The Audacious settings for module playback is only open to show how the actual gui controls look like.

Aaah, ok. Adwaita it is again. :D
Probably I like Adwaita even more now after the a bit longer escapade with Adapta.

Adapta is good in it's coherence, but there are few problems. After using it more, I realized that more complicated GUIs are simply more like one flat blob where it's not easy to navigate. And if the Papirus icons are thrown to the mix, it gets even worse. Toolbar part of the set is monochrome black and again makes everything not easy to navigate. In apps like Audacious that is not a problem, toolbar icons there are few and big, but stuff with small buttons becomes a bit of a nightmare.
Adwaita's GUI elements and icon theme makes for an immediately recognizable elements and just joy to work with for me. Tango did the same.
Well and another problem with too specific icon sets is the simple fact that if they don't provide icon for some app, then the default app's icon is likely not to fit the theme, but will likely fit rather well with Adwaita icons, as their style, while still it's own is rather universal. You know, their 'depth', saturation, contrast and level of shadowing and the fact that they don't resemble some specific shapes, like Faenza does e.g.

Basically, Adwaita rulez. ;)

Here's mine...totally minimalistic and purely functional!

I should note I can float windows under the semi-transparent controls, so I got use of the entire screen :-)
