View Full Version : Emacs 24.4 in F21 obsoleted the yow package

I just found this out when I tried to do M-x yow in Emacs. In recent versions before 24.4, Emacs had shipped with a bad yow.lines file, in order to avoid copyright issues. So I always kept a full yow.lines file handy and copied it to the /usr/share/emacs/<version>/etc/ directory whenever Emacs was updated in Fedora. That worked fine up until now.

The Emacs 24.4 NEWS (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/news/NEWS.24.4) file says to use the fortune or cookie1 packages as a replacement for yow, though without any instructions for how to use those. I went with cookie1, since fortune seems to have problems.

Here's what I did:

If you don't already have a full yow.lines file, you can get one here: https://github.com/shentonfreude/dot-emacs/raw/master/yow.lines

Then copy that yow.lines file into your ~/.emacs.d directory.

Then put this in your ~/.emacs file:

(setq cookie-file "~/.emacs.d/yow.lines")

In Emacs, do M-x cookie. You'll now see a Zippy quote in the minibuffer at the bottom of the window.

Good to hear they are working hard on important emacs functionality.

"Zippy the Pinhead" ceased to be chic-funny(in the never-was-funny sense) somewhat earlier than "Howard the Duck".

Better hide that porkpie hat Rupie' - "your license to 'cool'" may have been revoked/replaced by a bottle of geritol.

I love Howard the Duck! I really hope the cameo after the credits in Guardians of the Galaxy is an indication that there will be a re-make of the Howard the Duck movie, one that does him justice. He definitely looked more like the original Howard than the one in that horrible Lucas-produced 1986 film.

Have to agree w./ that. Even the reasonably attractive Lea Thompson of that era doesn't make it watchable.
