I have installed fedora 20 with kde. And wanted to install updates and used the command
sudo yum update. I am getting this
Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit...
The other application is: PackageKit
Memory : 19 M RSS ( 42 MB VSZ)
Started: Thu Nov 6 20:31:24 2014 - 05:57 ago
State : Sleeping, pid: 1671
I get this even at when I try it when the pc is poweerd on and no other package is started by me.

Yup, seen that. The only solution is to uninstall the idiotic software manager that comes with KDE. It runs all the time, incessantly looking for updates, almost permanently holding the lock to the rpm database.

So do 'ps -e | grep app' to get the exact name followed by something like:
killall appxxx
yum remove appxxx

That is packagekit running for Apper, the repo interface for KDE; it runs occasionally to check for updates.

I just kill the process with kill (kill 1671 in your case) and load my yum.

Personally, I like keeping Apper on the box because it puts a little icon in my taskbar when there are updates. YMMV

I open "Apper" from the Administration section of the KDE menu and from it's "Settings" section tell it never to check for updates.

Seems to have the same effect.

Seeing as this is Fedora, there's not usually any doubt there will be updates whenever you decide to check.
