I'm posting here for some advice/opinion on what is happening with my 4 month old HP Pavilion laptop. I recently had abrt start to log machine check exceptions when I wake the laptop from suspend (open the screen). It only happens at this point and not when in normal use. I get the following logs:-

I'm not convinced it's a hardware error otherwise I'd have thought that I'd see it more often. I'm tempted to raise a bug on Bugzilla, but thought I'd post here first for some thoughts.

Hardware event. This is not a software error.

You will get kicked out of any bugzilla with this.

Since the problem is hapening only in the suspend/resume cycle, I do not think that the problem is really with the hardware, but more with a buggy bios/dsdt/whatever (it is a hp after all).
The bad point is the 'Uncorrected error' message, which means data corruption.
If you have some time to lose, try to ask support from hp...

You will get kicked out of any bugzilla with this. That's what my worry was. I wasn't sure whether it could be considered a kernel bug or not. I'll ask HP then as it doesn't cost anything other than time.

Was the comment about HP some sort of brand snobbery? ;)

It was just some user experience. They have lost my trust a long time ago and are ranking at the first place on my blacklist. And from what I can read here and there, I will not change my mind.
This said, I also know someone who is using a hp and never had any problem with it.

Fair point. I'm quite happy with this one, except for this bug (if that's what it is). I might change my mind depending on what their support say - I bet it'll be "we don't support Linux on laptops"!

Good luck and keep us informed! :)
