View Full Version : Fixing the radeon_uvd error after upgrading to 3.10 kernels

You see an error that contains the following on your screen while the system is booting:

radeon_uvd: Can't load firmware "radeon/CYPRESS_uvd.bin"

You also see the same error in dmesg. You also may notice that your video performance also has dropped and cannot figure out why. Here was why that was the case for me.

This error is caused by changes to the radeon driver incorporated into the 3.10 kernels. I do not know if the following fix will work for everybody affected by the changes to the 3.10 kernels like I was, but here goes.

1. Grab the latest Linux-firmware package from: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=9736

2. Install the update.

3. Run the following commands in the following order (but you can choose your own plymouth theme):

$ sudo plymouth-set-default-theme -R spinfinity
$ sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

4. Reboot.

Problem was gone after doing that and video performance was better. Hope that this helps those who experience the same up after updating to 3.10 kernels.
