View Full Version : How to post images in your threads (Using the forum personal galleries)

Sometimes, a picture can truly be worth a thousand words. Therefore, we have a feature here on the forums which will allow you to upload your images, and then use them in your posts (if allowed in that particular forum. Some forums don't lend themselves to this feature, so it is turned off.) For the fast and dirty reference points, (tldr) look for the bold italics.

General Rules:

First things first. There are physical size and file size restrictions. These have been determined by what parameters would best serve the community as a whole. Therefore, we have restricted sizes to that which should fit on most screens, including most netbooks. If you are using a smart phone, tablet or something with smaller resolution than 1024 pixels wide ... that was your choice, you're on your own. We're not going to restrict things down that small.

As a general rule, try to save your images as .jpg files, and try t keep the resolution (quality) as small as possible to improve load times for those on slow connections. I find a good high file size break-point to be around 240kb.

Only registered members will be able to see locally stored illustrations/graphics/photos. That's deliberate. If you want to come to enjoy the party, you're going to have to get off the porch and step in the door.

If you have set your gallery to be private, nobody will be able to see what you've posted in the thread. (Except Admins and CMs and Moderators, of course. They can see everything, so be warned and careful!) If you want it to show up, set the containing gallery to Public.

You may have several galleries. You may post several photos/illustrations/screen-shots/graphics to each gallery. The amount allowed may be subject to change.

All forum rules regarding decorum will and do apply to your galleries. Any abusive language, off-color graphics, non-family friendly content will be deleted. And if you post it more than once, your gallery privileges will be summarily revoked.

Admins, CMs, and moderators have the final say in what's acceptable and what's not. Staff decisions in these matters are final. Some discussion may be allowed. Arguing will not be. Step over that cliff -- and your gallery privileges will go over it, too.

That all being said, let's get into the constructions about how to do it.

I'm going to go through these fairly quickly.

First ... open your forum account control panel. If you haven't figured out where that is yet, take a long slow look around any forum page while you are logged in. Chances are you'll find a link marked "User CP" right up there on the left end of the second tier of forum menus. <..;)..>

Now, open that link (in another tab).

The left-side control panel element will probably look a lot like this: The next step will be marked with a red arrow.

Figure 1. Control panel.

Click that link. It will bring you to here:

Figure 2. Album creation.

The links there are self explanatory. Provide the desired details on this next screen. If you want anybody else to be able to see your stuff, remember to mark the album as "Public."

Figure 3. Details entry screen

Once that is done, you will be guided to here:

Figure 4. Adding pictures

Seriously ... if I have to add more detailed instructions to that ... you need far more help than I can give you. <....>

And ... finally ... the upload screen. Pay attention to the instructions, and you should be ok from here. (And ... Yes. Your allowed specs will be different. Admins are ... special. <..:C..> It's part of the perks that come with the job. <..:p..> )

Figure 5. Uploading.

That should take care of getting them put into your albums. Next post will cover posting them into threads the proper way.

This is also trivial.

Open the picture from your album that you wish to upload. If you want to only post a link, copy the contents of the "Picture URL" box, and paste that into your desired post. If you wish the picture to be displayed in-line in your post, copy the contents of the "BB Code" box, and paste that into your post. If posting images is not allowed in that forum, it will automatically convert the BB Code into a URL.

And ... you're good to go.

Now ... wasn't that simple? <..:)..>

That being properly tutorialized ... Y'all have a good day! <..:thumb:..>

Thank you, Dan.

A good, complete, and beautifully illustrated how-to :)
