I am on fedora 17 with GNOME 3.4.2 and have installed python's IDLE but to get to it I have to run,

idle
in terminal every time i want to use it and was wondering if there is anyway I could create an icon that I could search for in the application search bar.

Any help would be appreciated

Just create an application entry with your favorite text editor in /usr/share/applications/ and call it idle.desktop for example.

vi /usr/share/applications/idle.desktop
Add add the following content:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=/usr/bin/idle
Name=Idle
GenericName=Idle
Icon=/path/to/some/icon
Terminal=false
Categories=Development;
Comment=Python IDLE
That way you will see Idle icon in "Programming" category of available applications. Add it to your favorites or do with it whatever you like.
