View Full Version : Another level of drill down is required

Please consider adding another level of drill down to the main forum sections.

For example, when someone wants help on installation, hitting that button should display a sub menu of releases so the user could focus in on his/her specific installation issue, say with F18.

Similarly, add the same sub menu of releases to each major category and organize the issues against releases.

Doing a search that dredges up information from a release that was EOL'd years ago just adds clutter and wastes time sifting through rubbish.

Current old version posts should be going in the "EOL" subgroup. So don't include the EOL group in your installation searches.
You can also greatly reduce noise from search in the "Installation Help" group by putting a reasonable time limit on the search. Since Fedora 18 just came out, put a month or so limit on searches.

The Search box can do all that if you add parameters (ie "Google Earth F18"). To add sub-layers would be nearly impossible for we poor unpaid minions to keep track of, however there is some chatter about menu changes among the Staff, so we'll think it all through.

Marko & Bob:

When an incident is started, the release that it's concerned with is or can be acquired from the poster. That piece of information can be a search criteria via the database look up. That's all I'm saying. You have the data or can have it, and then just use it as a piece of very important criteria to attenuate the noise.

Bill, the poster should be mentioning his version in his post, plus other packages that are involved in the problem. So, if you use the search box with YOUR version and the packagename, it should list your version/package first and the others further down the lists. Of course, if they don't mention "f18" or "f17" or whatever version, then their thread will be "down the list".

Essentially, this is a Google search setup that we're using, so it's restricted to what they've enabled. Now, for us to sub-group every forum into "f18" "f17" "f16" and "EOL", it's going to take forever to work it all out. Then, as versions reach EOL, we'd have to archive all those threads, start new F19's and ..... lots of work.

If you are willing to deal with the intransigence of the Vbulletin search engine, you can achieve a very fine grained search control. Instead of selecting the search box, consult the Search item in the menu below it. Unless you value any remaining hair. For, unless you are as retentive and pedantic as that particular forum function is, teeth grinding and hair pulling will soon follow.
