BREAKING NEWS! Netflix on Fedora linux work! After several tests we decided to share with you, a few months ago, our friends at I Heart Ubuntu made a call to the community to get Netflix on Ubuntu. Somehow. Legally. Without the need to install a virtual operating system or booting into it. Something as natural as possible. On that basis, although we have a plugin for Silverligh open this very buggy :dis:, Netflix is impossible to run this way.

http://i50.tinypic.com/wgyyb8.png

Thanks to Erich Hoover who created Silverligh patches to work properly, we can now enjoy this benefit, these patches are applied before the wine source code, in order to compile.

Except that Netflix NOW requires you to give up your rights to sue and submit to binding arbitration (for which they PAY) - you didn't read the "agreement" - you just clicked it so you could get more movies, didn't you?

I didn't and Netflix terminated me.

By the way, PayPal has also required you to "opt out" of this very SAME agreement - but I can find absolutely NO "opt out" on their site - I've looked.

- I might mention that all those [Accept] boxes you've been clicking without reading ('cause you just HAD to have what ever it was, or just didn't want to be bothered reading) ... You've given up your rights each time! The two I mention above are are only the LATEST - you've been agreeing to give up your legal rights all over the place (for a song, or a movie, or a credit card, or who knows what).

Freedom is lost NOT in one "fell swoop" - it is lost a "chip at a time" - with the exception of the CHUNK we gave up when G. W. Bush enacted the "Patriot Act" and we didn't SCREAM about.

Anyway - I've no longer any use for a company that requires me to give up my rights. You choose as you see fit.

[soap box burned]
and sorry for boring

For Paypal, you have to send a snail mail. (Not joking). I did that, I haven't heard anything though.
Don't know about Netflix--this is actually quite a common thing these days, but I suspect that if someone really gets enough folks ticked off that it will be declared invalid. However, I'm not a lawyer.

hummmm???

so, ah, er, do I have to install wine to get the Netflix program to work?

hope I'm not off topic here??
I'd like to give Netflix a try but I don't want to have run Windows to do it.

Nice to know I can watch Netflix online, if I decide I want the extra monthly expense.

I'm happy with my DVD through the mail account. Usually get two a week.

Thanks, This seems to be an error of "wine" for 64bit platforms, check if exists the following directories: / opt/Netflix64/bin/wine64.

If the path does not exist, probably is a bug in the installer.

If exists path, then possibly "wine" for 64bit platform is the problem. Netflix uses Windows Firefox, and silverligh only support 32-bit platforms.

Netflix Player works properly on 32-bit platforms, sorry

Is it the same or a different file to wget?

I just tried it and I get silverlight error code 1001 when trying to view a video...

Also it wrote to /opt/Netflix64 but the script in /usr/bin was looking for /opt/Netflix

Any ideas?

Okay I have netflix in linux...

Had to install mstcorefonts to the system as it appeared to be looking for specific ones...

Netflix then running very nicely in F18 x86_64 ;)

TL:DR; Missing fonts lead to 1001 ... fix fonts (and symlink path or something) and good!

Hi, Jimbob0i0, This is different, but with the same name. Ħthanks Sourceforge! If you compare the two files will see that this has a smaller size. Fixed a number errors. I've been a little busy with other projects, so, try Netflixplayer. Available now via PostInstallerF (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=285749)

Sorry my english is bad

I'm having an interesting problem where after installation (it tells me I have successfully installed Netflixplayer) the Netflixplayer shortcut in the Gnome Menu is also telling me "Netflix player successfully installed" when I click OK, of course it closes.

Where is the application so I can run it? under opt/Netflix and opt/Netflix64 I see the firefox.exe and various other pieces and parts, but nothing caught my eye to execute. It appears as though this Netflixplayer installed Wine..?

any help here on how to start the app when it wants to just rerun netflixplayer.sh ?

GNowakowski :

NetflixPlayer use wine, is based on the patched version of wine of Compholio Edition http://www.compholio.com/wine-compholio/ with some modifications for proper installation.

The program is on three paths:

/opt/Netflix/ or /opt/Netflix64/ (is the patched version of Wine)

/usr/bin/Netflix.sh (The launcher program path)

$HOME/.netflix (Netflixplayer, ctrl+h)

Netflixplayer To run from the command line (depending on the type of system 32 0 64 bits)

32bits

env WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.Netflix" /opt/Netflix/bin/wine "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" http://netflix.com/

64bits

env WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.Netflix" /opt/Netflix64/bin/wine "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" http://netflix.com/

I recommend reinstalling

Some times Silverligh no download correctly (This is out of our hands).

I tried a re install for my problem (no video only audio).
Same thing.I did notice that if i right click the (player) screen a silverlight tag comes up and netflix player keeps playing audio but my system freezes so i have to restart the computer.
Do i need the patched version of Wine also?

I do not understand this i get perfect audio though. :)

debo2011

wacmaster:

You do not need the patched version because the following path:
/opt/Netflix/ or /opt/Netflix64/ (is the patched version of Wine).

Unless you want to compile wine (http://www.compholio.com/wine-compholio/) with patches.

I think this problem is due to lack of OpenCL, OpenCL need to compile wine Ħhey OpenCL only have the proprietary drivers!.

Thanks for the quick reply. It doesn't appear to help to reinstall. I redownloaded using wget, and reinstalled. I still get the "Netflix player sucessfully installed" message when I try to run the app. Apparently their is something missing. I'm not sure if you have a string you want me to enter in order to troubleshoot... but when I run your 64 bit line I get "opt/Netflix64/bin/wine" No such file or directory.
I went to opt/Netflix64/bin/ myself, and their is a wine executable... I'm not sure why it won't run.

Hi, GNowakowski

1

When you use "wget -c" , not replace the previous download, so it is likely that you are reinstalling a corrupt version.

delete the previous file in your home directory "Netflixplayer.tar.gz"

rm -f $HOME/Netflixplayer.tar.gz

and reinstall

2

GNowakowski: please no forget "/" before of opt "/opt/Netflix64/bin/"

if it no work, try:

Any tips?
I've been running an xp machine to do this before, so figuring this out will be awesome. I hate windows.
If there's any information I need to post to help with this, I can get whatever log from wherever. I would attempt to do this myself, but it's far too advanced for me.

Debo, thank you so much for this. It works pretty well. I'd say great but it doesn't seem to run in high def. Oh well, at least it works without having to run a virtual server.

And what exactly is it you feel you gonna need to sue Netflix for? Just askin:doh:

Your best bet is probably to delete all the installation locations and reinstall, making sure to run as root/sudo on the install.

For those who see no video but hear audio, make sure you have the 32 video libs install

***Edit***
This only applies to those who use rpmfusion to install proprietary drivers. I don't know about the opensource drivers (I assume they don't have this issue) or drivers installed directly from AMD/Nvidia

For AMD:

sudo yum install xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs.i686

For NVidia:

sudo yum install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686

Followed everything in the first post on this thread and all seemed to go well except it said I needed to install Silverlight and browser may not be supported. So I downloaded it manually from within that browser session and then double clicked it in the downloads of Firefox. Exit, then restart, try watching a video and Firefox hangs.

Close and restart Netflix Desktop then go to the Silverlight site in that browser session and it still gives the error message that my browser may be unsupported but that I can try installing manually. Its like Silverlight is only partly installed or something. I check extensions and Silverlight is listed as installed.

I try everything again as root just to be sure, same result although it was from the command line this time so I have a log of the output.

I checked through the whole thread, nothing useful, nvidia libs installed, etc. Not sure where to go from here.

Still nothing?

I have discovered that Silverlight does indeed open and cover the whole browser window (making it appear the browser has hung), but nothing appears. I can right click and get into Silverlight settings, but there is nothing useful in there.

Same result here. I wonder if there is an older version of Silverlight required?

UPDATE:
I noticed that Silverlight wasn't downloaded during the initial installation, which should put the exe file in ~/.netflix-tmp. I used the wget command from the /usr/bin/netflix-desktop script and downloaded it there manually. Then I deleted ~/netflix-desktop, which forces both Firefox and Silverlight to be reinstalled. Now everything appears to work...almost. I start a show and it goes through the red "loading" screen, but then barfs with the "Whoops, something went wrong" error blaming it on an "Internet Connection Problem". This looks to be a problem with wine and the compholio patches:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/netflix-desktop/+bug/1156973

The very last post has another Fedora user who has a repo of wine rpms that I will try.

There also appear to be problems with auto-updates to Firefox breaking things. You can hit F10 and go into Tools->Options->Advanced->Update to disable that.

Thanks for updating it. I've been looking forward to it since updating to F19.

I've run into some trouble though. When running netflix-desktop I get

If I just make a sym link from wine64 to wine in that folder, I get

This is the only output I notice that seems relevant:

Might be a buffering problem of some sort? Happens with both of the latest two wine-silverligh versions.

Other Silverlight videos works wthout a hitch, for example the test with DRM at http://web.sldrm.video.msn.com/d1/sldrm.html and some news sites. Have tried disabling firewalld without any luck.

Ha - I just gave up after a few tries directed by a few folk. I got connected OK but when I clicked a movie, the computer abruptly rebooted. Is easier just to reboot into Windoze for Netflix for now.

As Erich seems to have fixed this network issu (ref https://bugs.launchpad.net/netflix-desktop/+bug/1156973?comments=all) will your packages be updated debo? Or is this another problem?

I don't believe, but maybe the new release wine-silverlight-1.7 will fix the problem, is the more recent version... please read the first page (http://www.forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=286230).

Remember Netflix-Desktop uses wine, consider that this is not 100% stable. The most common problems are with the video drivers.

As i mentioned, I have tried with the two latest versions. None work. Both exhibit the exact problem as mentioned in the bug report as previously described - first, it stops with a network problem on 98/89%, and afterwards it stops with the same error nearly as soon as it starts loading. Somehow it seems like the wine-silverligh is unable to cache? It works with some other silerlight sites, thoug not all.

Even with the new silverlight plugin (wine-silverligh-1.7.0-1.fc19.x86_64) and netflix-desktop-0.7.0-7.fc19.noarch, I'm getting the N8156-6022 error.

The bug reports are from 2012... :/

I'm having the exact same problem after switching to fedora. Netflix worked great in Linux mint 15 but it loads up to 98% and get that error now.

I seem to be having this issue, but what's really happening is that when I click to watch or play the movie, it seems to restart X like as if I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Backspace instead of playing the movie.
