View Full Version : How to install MATE on Fedora and if it is worth it

Well, I did it, I got MATE (fork of Gnome 2 using Mutter Clutter instead of Compiz...) on Fedora 17. Here's how to get it:

sudo yum groupinstall mate-desktop
That's it! Just log out, select MATE in your desktop environments, and you now have a *close representation* of Gnome 2.

Some things, however, are different from the one and only Gnome 2...

-You will notice in the upper right corner, your username is gone, along with the options to log off, lock the screen, etc. It is not even in the panel widgets. :(

-Also, on the lower right in your screen, you may remember a trash can around there. Yup, bye-bye trash can. :dis: I am still trying to find out how to get it back. Drag n' Drop doesn't work here...:(

-I like to use CTRL+L to lock my screen a lot. Really handy. It seems I hit a pothole here, as it was missing xscreensaver. When I first installed MATE, that was a non issue, as it functioned in that area like Gnome 2.

-Yet another thing you will find missing is your email. By the "Applications Places System", only Firefox shows up there. I had to manually add Thunderbird up there.

-The default window theme is just different enough from the original Gnome 2 theme 'Clearlooks' to drive me nuts. I had to download Clearlooks for F14...yippe.

-This is really a non-issue, but it would not see the Fedora default background, for 17, it is the fireworks. I had to manually go into /usr/share/backgrounds to fish it out. MATE originally gave me the default Gnome 3 background. :Y

MATE is not 100%, at least not yet. I really do hope that they will add these features. Soon-ish.

So, enjoy Gnome 2...[cough]...er MATE!

Here's some info from the Mate site. Scroll down to the Fedora section. You may want to pay particular attention to the blurps concerning Fedora 18 and MATE.

Also, here's a link to the Mate forum. The maintainer is usually prompt to answer questions.

I know you may be having difficulty getting applets, etc. but Mate does have those applets/indicators available. Either the repository you are connected to doesn't support them or you are overlooking them.

My bad. It looks like you can get Compiz for MATE. But it's tricky.

I'm running compiz on F18 MATE and it works great for me.

Works on F17 as well.

One things MATE lacks is notification of available software updates. You can get it from here (but you'll have to compile it):
