View Full Version : FC 17 needs several logins before desktop works

On my FC 17-65 XFCE Spin system with noveau video driver, the following problem has cropped up:

I boot and login as an ordinary user. The XFCE desktop appears. I click the mouse on something and the desktop vanishes. Instead of the desktop I see the printing from the last text boot screen. Usually the login screen reappears, but sometimes I just stay stalled on the text screen. At the new login screen, I login again and the process repeats itself several times. When the desktop screen vanishes, I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a useable console. Ctrl-Alt-F2 produces a black screen without a login prompt. However the machine is not completely frozen since I can reboot with Ctrl-alt-delete.

My impression is that the first login produces a desktop with saved session of several applications. When I finally am able to login permanently, it is to a desktop with no saved applications. I don't know whether this a side-effect of the problem or a hint about it's cause.

The only suspicious thing that I've found in the logs so far is in /var/log/messages which shows this type of error:

The "runnable check failed" error has been discussed on the forum, but I don't understand how any of the proposed solutions relate to my particular system. Doing updates this morning, didn't fix the problem.

If you just want a workable system, replace gdm with lightdm. But then you'll lose the chance to debug that.

Are you saying that this problem is a gdm bug?

Update: I've discovered that I don't have to login to crash the video. If i boot the machine and let it sit for about 30 seconds while the login screen is displayed, the display seems to crash and restart. After that, I can login without causing a crash.
