I downloaded and installed Eclipse JUNO in Fedora 17, KDE desktop and created an eclipse.desktop. The icon does appear in the Application.Development section but it does not open when selected. I am able to open Eclipse on the command line.

The contents of my eclipse.desktop:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Eclipse
Comment=Eclipe SDK 3.7.2
Exec=eclipse
Icon=/opt/eclipse/icon.xpm
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=GNOME;Application;Development;
StartupNotify=true

I'm using F16. I replicated your self-made eclipse.desktop file and ran it past "desktop-file-validate".

BASH:~/-> /usr/bin/desktop-file-validate /home/paul/eclipse.desktop
/home/paul/eclipse.desktop: warning: key "Encoding" in group "Desktop Entry" is deprecated
/home/paul/eclipse.desktop: error: (will be fatal in the future): value "GNOME" in key "Categories" in group "Desktop Entry" requires another category to be present among the following categories: GTK
/home/paul/eclipse.desktop: warning: value "GNOME;Application;Development;" for key "Categories" in group "Desktop Entry" contains a deprecated value "Application"
Maybe the future is now.

How did you install Eclipse - through repos or by hand (through tarball) ?
