about 1 times of 10 the system answer in the correct mode (logout, turn-off or reboot)
about 5 times of 10 the gnome menu hangs after the "end session" options (so i must use the power button , and with it the system goes off correctly: i see all the turn-off messages)
about 4 times of 10 i can choose the "end session" option, i see the various options (logout, turn-off and reboot) but when i click "ok" the screen goes black and still black (i must use the power button , and with it the system goes off correctly)

any idea?
thx
(sorry for the eng..)

Do you see any errors in /var/log/gdm/:0.log when this happens?

You can see the log after a restart. You may have to look through /var/log/gdm:0.log.1 , .log.2, etc. in order to find the messages with thte right date.

if you have an ATI card, it may be the same-ish problem I was having (fixed now):
