File permissions error when trying to install new software. I get this error when trying to install Oracle 9i on Fedora3:

Error in writing to directory /hdb1/tmp/OraInstall2004-11-21_11-13-26AM. Please ensure that this directory is writable and has atleast 55 MB of disk space. Installation cannot continue.

The disk has plenty of space. Im running under the oracle user. He is able to create the said OraInstall2004-11-21_11-13-26AM folder but apparently not write to it?

Im following the instructions from>

http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle10g.shtml#CheckingTmpSpace

and as such Ive created the tmp file on a second hard drive:

su - root
mkdir /<AnotherFilesystem>/tmp
chown root.root /<AnotherFilesystem>/tmp
chmod 1777 /<AnotherFilesystem>/tmp
export TEMP=/<AnotherFilesystem> # used by Oracle
export TMPDIR=/<AnotherFilesystem> # used by Linux programs like the linker "ld"

So to sum it up, the tmp folder is on hdb1(seocnd hard drive), the Oracle user can create OraInstall2004-11-21_11-13-26AM folder but then not write to it. Any ideas?

TIA, ChrisR

How is /dev/hdb1 mounted, e.g. what's the /etc/fstab entry look like?
