I have dell inspiron n5050 having 1 GB graphics card.
I install fedora 15(64 bit) on it. Every thing was fine. But its graphics was not good. character was not
good hence to install graphics driver i installed ATI driver by these commands

1) yum localinstall –nogpgcheck
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

2) yum -y update

3) yum -y install akmod-catalyst kmod-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-devel xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs

After it I reboot my computer.. it is booting but after displaying the balloon.. it does not display Login screen.. it just get stuck there every time. I tried 5-6 times same thing happen.

Before installing this when i reboot my computer i was able to login properly but now i can't.

So what to do ??
please help me

How about removing the proprietary driver and sticking to the open source one.
When AMD releases a new Catalist version you can try it out again.

You should install either akmod-catalyst or kmod-catalyst.

Here is some reading.
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=155503&pp=10

I tried the catalyst driver before but came to the conclusion that the open drivers were actually working better with my card.

Maybe things have changed now :)

I can't login in fedora. So how can i do any thing before that. I can't install any thing.

So first i have to fix this problem. So what to do so that i can login ?

---------- Post added at 02:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:09 PM ----------

Now i boot fedora in text mode & run this command:-

yum remove akmod-catalyst kmod-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-devel xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs

Then all these package get erased. I remove them because only after installing these package i got the problem.

But still when i boot in GUI mode there is no login text box.. it got hanged.. few last line printed by kernel

Starting wait for Plymouth Boot Screen to Quit...
Started LSB : start & stop sendmail...
Starting SYSV : Late init script for live image...
Started SYSV : Late init script for live image...

[then it hang here]

What to do ?? please help

You can log in as a single user (you have to google that up yourself, since I'm on the wrong computer now, don't remember if F15 uses grub legacy or grub2 and I have a hangover so I cannot think straight either :) ) To fix things under the hood. You could also try hitting Ctrl+Alt+F2 when the login screen is supposed to show up, and see if it takes you to a virtual terminal. From there you can log in with your user name and password, and use yum as normal. When you are done just reboot with the command
shutdown -r now and see if you succeeded. If you need to configure any textfiles, I recommend you get yourself familiar with the nano texteditor first.

but still when i try to login in GUI mode.. it boot but does not show any login text box.

So what i have to do. what to install or remove so that i can login in GUI mode.

Are the open ATI drivers installed/loaded again?
'lsmod' will show you all loaded modules, look for anything related to ati or radeon.
Did you read leigh's thread about installing ati drivers?

You might also get some answers from /var/log/xorg.0.log

Yes I have installed akmod using

yum reinstall mesa-libGL
yum update kernel
reboot

rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
yum install akmod-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs.i686
reboot

You don't have ATI graphics, you have Intel graphics. Remove everything ATI-related and stick to the i915 module.

Can you tell me command to install i915 modules ?

dknation

You should be fine with just removing the catalyst-stuff
It's there already, as shown in your lsmod output.
Don't know if you have to repair anything, depending on the amount of messing up you have done ;)
Searching this forum and google should get you there.

I'm off to work now.

It is very good with windows 7.
