feel free to copy these files (or else why put them here?). I have downloaded a test package from each repository and everything is stable.

I hope this helps

Please feel free to post your own or any updates to the ones i just posted. I am hoping we can get this discussion down to one thread for everybody's sake

I have not had a chance to look into fedora.us yet. I am hoping to have that investigated by the end of today.

Also, if you use these files, put them in /etc/yum.repos.d/ and remove the .txt from the end (i had to add that because of the forum's file filter)

Thanks! Just added livna and freshrpms and both are working fine. Planning on adding 'dag' as well?

I have heard accounts that dag and freshrpms are not always compatible with each other. I dont know whether this is true or not and FC3 is my first attempt at this distro of linux. If they are compatible, then yes, i will look into dag.

freshrpms and dag are compatible with each other, but not with fedora.us and livna.org

Yes, it works finally lol thank you. Man yum is smoking now its so much faster then in fc2 im loving it :)

Hey Mods you should sticky this topic so people can find these repos before making more posts

# cat fedora-us.repo
[fedora.us]
name=fedora.us
baseurl=http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/RPMS.updates/
enabled=0
gpgcheck=0

I dont know enough about fedora.us to tell if this is the right folder or not, but it was the only one i could find.

----

I left this one enabled=0 because thats how i have it in my file (im still not sure if it is the right one or not, fedora newbie here), if you want to use this, change that value to 1.

Also, please note that i left gpgcheck=0 THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA, but i left it that way in my example for compatibility reasons, please do yourself a favor and import all gpg keys.

Thanks

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know what repositories are compatible... I got the impression from one of the earlier posts that at least dag and freshrpms are not compatible with fedora.us and livna.org? Does this mean that I should only have either dag and freshrpms OR fedora.us and livna.org, but not all of them at the same time??? And if I have been using for instance freshrpms, I can't start using fedora.us later on, even if I remove the yum.repo pointing to freshrpms???

Please enlighten me :)

I have the same question. I planned to use livna and fedora.us, but freshrpms has very many other good useful packages like audacity, bluefish, synaptic (!) that aren't in livna or fedora.us. Do I have to use tarballs or may I use freshrpms also? Hm, actually it is not compatable ... So tarballs?

Well, it's early in the test, but so far no conflicts with Yum listing freshrpms, livna and fedora. Since I'm unwilling to give up Dag, I've listed him as sole Apt repository and will try to use Apt for installations only. Time will tell if my dag installations give me update conflicts on Yum.

Update: Well, that proved to be a bad idea. The first 'refresh' that Synaptic did was to attempt to remove Apt and Synaptic. I'll leave Synaptic alone and try to work with Apt from the terminal. :o

& dries

I usually use Fedora.us and Livna and when they don't have a package open up the other ones and just yum install <package> that way it will handle dep's and doesn't upgrade a whole lot of packages.

In Core 3 you can enable disabled repositories by the --enablerepo=name switch, and at the same time disable conflicting repositories with the --disablerepo=name switch. name is the name of the repository, the part which is in [ ] in the configuration.

here's an example:

yum --enablerepo=freshrpms --disablerepo=fedora.us --disablerepo=livna.org mplayer

This makes it a bit easier to work with.

megaprogman

whats the signicance of having mplayer at the end?
or are you saying that you can specify which repo to use with which package?
because that would be truely awesome :)

Well, if your disabling livna & fedora.us but enabling fresh, than I think you have your answer. ;)

Sorry but when you say not to mix these, do you mean not to mix them for the specific package installer like Yum or Apt so it would be ok for instance to use use Fedora.us and livna.org for Yum and then use freshrpms, newrpms, atrpms and dag for Apt?

Ok I found the problem which no one coudl help me out at all in #fedora in the freenet network. Not one person. If any of you have updated your FC2 to FC3 listen in.

#mv /etc/yum.conf yum.conf.org
#mv /etc/yum.conf.rpmnew yum.conf

The add these lines as it sais to do on the rpm.livna.org site just below where is sais. I put them right into the yum.conf file.

# PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo
# in /etc/yum.repos.d
### See http://www.fedora.us/wiki/FedoraSources
### And insert here the fedora.us repository configuration

### And then add these lines to access rpm.livna.org repositories:

Why would you need livna to update core/base from fc2 to fc3 :D

sgtbob
20th April 2005, 02:26 PM
I know this is a really basic question, but I need some help on the 'how to' enter a repository into my /etc/yum.conf as located in the FC3 Bible, page 178.

I've read this manual and several other 'Fedora' manuals that discuss adding repo's to this file, and read cybrjackle data above, but the specifics for a noob are daunting. Would you be so kind as to post a detailed 'how to' for me? I note that you are using 'vi' to make some changes in the above post, and it seems straightforward enough - but, my RH FC3 Bible doesn't add the 'enabled' and gpg check' data.

Here is what I perceive to be the process being discussed and if I'm astray, please correct me:
(1) as root, enter 'cd /etc/yum.repos.d/';
(2) then - 'vi freshrpms.repo';
(3) then - do I enter - '[freshrpms]
name=FreshRPMS-Fresh
baseurl=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/$releasever/$basearch/freshrpms
enabled=0
gpgcheck=0'
(4) save - Where/how?

FC3 Bible talks about configuring the '/etc/yum.conf' file which I think must be what gets the repos into the system.

Any help appreciated.

SgtBob

If your not familiar with "vi", you can use something like gedit which is a gui based editor. The way to write and quit out of vi is the following:

esc
shift :
wq
<enter>

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a good day for a 'noob' -

I used cybrjackle procedure to put the 'extras.repo' into FC3 and following instructions, obtained the below listed results. I had an error on the first try with the GPG key, but downloaded and installed the appropriate rpm key for 'Extras'. Then used your instructions for 'vi' and the whole thing worked. As I said -this has been a great day. Many thanks for the help - linux folks are really helpful. Hope I can reciprocate when I learn more about the OS.

[root .......................... yum.repos.d]# vi extras.repo (here I used the suggestion from the last message and entered the data into the vi editor)
