View Full Version : f15: /var/log/dmesg not being updated

I run F15 on my desktop PC and /var/log/dmesg is not being updated. I used preupgrade to upgrade from F14 to F15 on June 3. I boot F15 at least once per day. /var/log/dmesg has not been updated since June 3. /var/log/dmesg was being updated correctly when I ran F14. On f15, if I issue "dmesg" from the command line, I get the expected result. Is this a bug?

Try running "sudo systemctl enable rsyslog.service" to permanently fix the problem. If you want more information, see this bug report (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=699198).

I tried it and rebooted. /ver/log/dmesg is still not being updated. I browsed the referenced bug report. It appears to concern mainly /var/log/messages. My /var/log/messages appears to be OK going back since the time of the upgrade from F14. The weekly archived messages files, e.g. /var/log/messages-20110605 have hundreds of KB of content.

I'm not sure what writes /var/log/dmesg if it's not the syslog daemon. Mine is being updated, but I didn't notice if it was updating while I was affected by the bug I linked. A little searching tells me it's updated late in the boot process. Try googling /var/log/dmesg and see if you can find more. Just so you know, there's no klogd running on my system, and /var/log/dmesg still updates.

Wondering if running logrotate manually would help? Thanks.

on my F15 install, I don't even have a /var/log/dmesg

Mine was a fresh install and not an upgrade from a previous release.

Possibly they did away with the /var/log/dmesg file in F15?

No, they didn't do away with it, because here is one (http://www.harald-hoyer.de/personal/blog/fedora-15-dmesg/view).

umm humm.. and where did you get that one from? look at the date on it. It's over a month old. May 9.

Either you aren't updating your system and getting new kernels, or you aren't rebooting after the update, or Something changed so that Fedora no longer creates the /var/log/dmesg file on bootup and what you have is an old file.

Very interesting... I did a yum update from F14 to F15 in April, and I see this:

$ ll /var/log/dmesg*
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 58081 Apr 7 14:36 /var/log/dmesg
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 57799 Apr 7 13:39 /var/log/dmesg.old

Obviously, I didn't check the date on the file before my first reply. I have to agree with DBelton, /var/log/dmesg is no longer updated. Those of us who upgraded still have the last one generated before the update. A quick sudo rm /var/log/dmesg* should clean up the leftovers. :)

the dmesg command seems to pull the correct current data from someplace, but there is no dmesg file that I can find.

Possibly it's now pulling the information out of /var/log/messages?

Edit:

Did some searching around on bugzilla and found one that looks like they may have changed dmesg to use /var/log/messages, but from the way it's worded, I am not completely certain.

That one isn't mine, btw; I ran a search on this issue and found a dmesg file for F15. I fail to see how in just over a month they could have done away with dmesg completely already.

well, the timing is about right. The dmesg file posted above is may 9, and the update in the bugzilla report that mentions changing it to use /var/log/messages was dated may 6.

FWIW, on July 6 this problem was submitted to RedHat bugzilla: (I only discovered this on August 4)

Just add your comments to the older bug report instead of reposting a new one.

The reason I opened a new bug is I could have sworn the existing bug was for Fedora 15 (not 16). I must be hallucinating.

I bumped the old bug tag to 16.
