I have updated wp-config.php with the database name I created in MySQL, the database user name and password, and left the database hostname as localhost. All settings confirmed using the status command in MySQL.

WordPress was untar or extracted into the root folder of apache,

i had just done everything ...as guided by this website " http://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2010/install-wordpress-on-fedora-centos-red-hat-rhel/ " but still i cant view my wordpress installation page by http://wordpress/
when i load the http://wordpress/ the fedora test page for apache appears...
i had checked wheather wp is there is the root directory or not but the wp is also perfectly putted in root directory of apache

and whenever i tried to view http://wordpress/wp-admin/install.php
it says error "The requested URL /wp-admin/install.php was not found on this server."

That is strange, shouldnt apache create this user on install? are you sure apache is installed? Is wordpress in /var/www?

I found it easier to install wordpress from the repos (yum install wordpress).

Then, as it puts itself in /usr/share/wordpress, one can just do a symlink. After that I don't think I even had to edit httpd.conf.

Even though it's for F8, should still work.

www-data is for debian or ubuntu

fedora / RHEL uses apache
