I lost the redhat icon on the taskbar, I have been searching for a while now to figure how to get it back with no luck. Since it is a system icon, there must be something which I have dismantle by accident - I would appreciate any tips on that.

You've probably altered the icon set, for the whole system. If your using KDE, you'll need to load up the Control Centre and under "Appearance and Themes" select Icons. Then select Bluecurve from the list and click OK. The K button will now be a Redhat hat.

Thanks - you see the button is totally gone! I tried however to follow your advice - it does change the properties of the icons in general, but the start app icon is gone and I have not managed to bring it back... :(

first time I run into that...

KDE or Gnome?

For KDE: Right-click on the panel then choose "Add -> Special Button -> K Menu".

mip gave you the solution for KDE. For GNOME, right-click the panel then select Add to Panel -> Menu Bar.
