setting it up to handle one of my email accounts as a start, i can get evolution to receive mail but not to send. in outlook, i have to change the smtp port from 25 to 587 for high-speed connections. otherwise the server blocks, and i feel sure that's what's causing my problem in evolution: i can't find where to change the port to 587.

looking through some other posts here, it seems like it may not be possible through the evolution gui. if not, are there things i can enter from the terminal that will carry over into evolution settings? if there are (or better: if it can be done in evolution after all), instructions appropriate for a linux newbie would be much appreciated! tx

it's easy, but not entirely intuitive. You just specify the smtp server like this:

smtp.somehost.com:587

stick a colon on the end, and the port number you want to use after it.

worked, tx! actually makes total sense--just specify the complete socket
