I am using Fedora 12 64 bit in my HP laptop.
The configuration is given below.
2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo processor
4 GB RAM
Nvidia 8400 GS 256 MB graphics card
160 GB HDD

I was using Firefox, Rythmbox and file manager.
The system hanged at some point during my browsing.
What might be the problem? I couldn't do anything. I did a hard restart.
Any suggestions? It happened to me two times.

Are you using the proprietary Nvidia driver or Nouveau ?

I have occasional freezes for 5-10 seconds but they are rare and far between and I never need a hard reset. I think its either Xorg or the Nvidia driver.

Well Nvidia said its a Xorg bug and Xorg probably says its Nvidia's driver. I don't wanna scare you but maybe you can do nothing but wait for them to fix it. The whole system shouldn't be hard freeze, if you installed the driver as described in leigh's guide you can't do much more. This problem is really annoying even if its only sometimes.

EDIT: Does any special action trigger the freeze for you ? (Flash in FF for example)

I hope so. I was doing something (video) in firefox. That may be the cause for that.

Yes it could be. I was reading up again on Nvidia forums and its indeed Xorg 1.7.x. Some people reported there are no freezes like that with the older Xorg 1.6.x. That Nvidia guy said they are in early stages of investigation so....oh well. Many threads like this one there: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=149072
